The squad for the three-match ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy features several notable inclusions and exclusions, reflecting the selectors’ strategic choices ahead of these crucial tournaments.
Rohit Sharma will lead the team, with Axar Patel appointed vice-captain. This decision highlights the growing importance of the Axar in the squad as an all-terrain vehicle.
Veteren pasture Mohammed Shami has been included, bringing experience to the bowling line-up. His performance will be pivotal as India aim to regain glory in international tournaments.
Despite his stellar performance in domestic cricket, Karun Nairwho scored 752 runs in just seven innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, was overlooked for selection. The selectors decided not to include him due to his long absence from international cricket since 2017.
The inclusion of star pacer jasprit bumrah it remains subject to his recovery from a back injury sustained during the Sydney Test against Australia. Reports suggest that Bumrah is expected to feature in the Champions Trophy if deemed fit. For the England ODIs, the selectors have included Harshit Rana in the 15-man squad instead of Bumrah.
India’s campaign begins with a three-match ODI series against England starting February 6, followed by their Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh on February 20. The much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan is scheduled for February 23. India will finish their group stage with a match against New Zealand on March 2 in Dubai.
