In a significant move to promote women’s cricket across the country, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced that the 2025 season of Women’s Premier League (WPL) will be housed in four spaces. Speaking at a press conference after a special general meeting in Mumbai, BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla they confirmed the cities and the start date of the long-awaited season.
The decision marks an important milestone in the evolution of women’s cricket in India. With the WPL gaining momentum since its inception, the BCCI’s commitment to expanding its reach is evident in the multi-venue approach for the upcoming season. After successful editions in Mumbai (2023) and Delhi-Bengaluru (2024), WPL 2025 will bring the action to Mumbai, Lucknow, Bengaluru and Vadodara, ensuring fans from various regions can witness the excitement first hand.
The grand final of WPL 2025 will be held at the new Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara. Located just 20 kilometers from the city centre, the stadium made its international debut recently during India’s Women’s ODI series against the West Indies. Known for its state-of-the-art facilities, the Kotambi Stadium currently hosts the knockout stages of the Vijay Hazare Trophyfurther demonstrating its ability to host high-profile matches.
The BCCI’s decision to include Vadodara as a key venue reflects the region’s growing support for cricket and its potential to become a hub for women’s sports.
The choice of Mumbai, Lucknow, Bangalore and Vadodara stems from the overwhelming support these cities have shown for the sport. Mumbai, the birthplace of Indian cricket, has a rich legacy and an enthusiastic fan base. Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium has become a prominent venue for hosting matches in recent years. Bangalore, with its cricket-loving crowd, has been instrumental in supporting the women’s game, while Vadodara is fast emerging as a major city for women’s cricket infrastructure.
The WPL 2025 season will begin on February 7. While the detailed schedule and venue allocation of matches are yet to be finalised, the multi-city format promises to bring the excitement of the league to fans from different regions.
The BCCI’s move is in line with its broader objective of developing women’s cricket as a premier sport. By holding matches in four cities, the league not only aims to inspire budding talent but also raise the profile of women’s cricket in India and beyond.
