Michelle and Barack Obama have been honest about their relationship with the rumors of divorce constantly.
The former President and the first woman tie the knot in 1992. The couple Share women Malia and Sasha, which they welcomed in 1998 and 2001, respectively. Previously, Michelle opened why she chooses to come for her and the highs and lows of Barack.
“I’m talking about marriage because I just think number 1, most people talk about it,” said Michelle during the January 2024 chapter “On purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast. “Because what is happening is, by not knowing, that you are striking, in your relationship, some natural rough pieces, like, understandable, and you want to give up. And it’s like, ‘Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no. That doesn’t stop worthy. That’s why I joked, it’s like, ‘Oh, you’re mad at your partner, you’re crazy for a year and you think the wedding is over.’ “
In 2025, rumors turned that Barack and Michelle were aiming for a split – but the Come author directly have addressed the speculation on several occasions.
“That’s the thing we as women struggle with – disappoint people,” he divided during the April 2025 episode Bush Sophia“Work in Progress” podcast. “That is, so much so that people could not … even fathom that I made a choice for myself, that they have to assume that my husband and I were divorcing.”

They’re not ‘couples’ goals’
Michelle opened about how she and Barack have marital issues Just like everyone else.
“I don’t want people to look at Barack as the goals of a hashtag couple and don’t know that there are no, no, there are some broken things that happen even in the best of weddings,” said Michelle during the January 2024 episode of the “on purpose with Jay Shetty” podcast. “After 31 years, yes, we still do (cross the line), but you know it faster. And then you apologize. You learn how to say my bad, okay? That takes a moment, right?”
Michelle admitted that she and Barack had “made a lot of mistakes” and “got it wrong,” but that’s why they have stayed together after all this time.
A host-white house is battling
Speaking to a group of students at Hamilton College in April 2025, Barack admitted that he was work on prioritization his marriage and Michelle following his presidency. (Barack served two seasons between 2009 and 2017.)
“Look, I was in a deep flaw with my wife,” quoted Barack. “So I’ve been trying to dig myself out of that hole by doing fun things from time to time.”
Not attending the inauguration together
Speculating speculated that Barack and Michelle have difficulties after she had not attended the inauguration Donald TrumpSecond season in early 2025. Months later Michelle decided talk on the rumors.
“My decision to omit the inauguration, you know, what people don’t realize, or my decision to make choices at the beginning of this year, had such ridiculous and criticism. Like, people couldn’t believe that I say no for any other reason, that they must assume that my marriage was falling apart, you know?” He said on the April 2025 episode of “IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson”. “It’s like, though I’m here really trying to own my life and practice deliberately to make the choice that was right for me.”
Michelle added that she had taken a lot out of her not to do “the thing that was considered right, but do the things that were (right) for me.”
