Ayush Mhatre sets record for youngest player in List A cricket

Mumbai’s Ayush Mhatre etched his name into the history books on Tuesday, becoming the youngest player to score more than 150 runs in List A cricket. The young prodigy of 17 years achieved this feat during a Vijay Hazare Trophy clash against Nagaland, breaking the previous record set by the Indian batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal.

At just 17 years and 168 days, Mhatre surpassed Jaiswal’s mark of 17 years and 291 days. In 2019, Jaiswal had set the record while playing for Mumbai against Jharkhand. Mhatre’s 181 off just 117 balls included 15 fours and 11 towering sixes, which propelled Mumbai to an intimidating total of 403 for seven in 50 overs.

A rising star from Virar

Born and brought up in the Mumbai suburb of Virar, Mhatre has been a revelation since making his debut for the domestic giants earlier this season. His consistent performances across all formats have made him a mainstay for the team.

He was part of the Irani Cup-winning Mumbai team that ended a 27-year drought by defeating Rest of India in October. On his Ranji Trophy debut, Mhatre showed his potential with a consistent 52 off 71 balls, even as Mumbai fell short against Baroda in their first match.

Building momentum in domestic cricket

Mhatre’s season has been a mix of brilliance and resilience. After his debut, he played a match-winning 176 against Maharashtra, an innings with 22 fours and four sixes. Mumbai cruised to a nine-wicket victory thanks to his heroics.

Despite having quieter outings against Tripura and Odisha, Mhatre bounced back with a second first-class century against the Services, scoring 116 runs off 149 balls. This knock cemented his position as one of the brightest young talents in Indian cricket.

Shining on the international stage

Mhatre’s form earned him a place in the India Under-19 squad Asian Cup. He contributed fifties against Japan and the UAE before falling short in the final, where India lost to Bangladesh. His performances demonstrated his ability to handle pressure on the international stage.

Having lost the Bombay one Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy title triumph, Mhatre returned to the Vijay Hazare Trophy in style. He smashed a fluent 78 in a high-scoring match against Karnataka, further underlining his capabilities in the 50-over format.
