The Australian national cricket team finally got their hands on the Border-Gavaskar trophy when they beat the Indian national cricket team by 6 wickets in the fifth match of the series. They were impressive with bat and ball at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, where the final match took place, and booked their place in the ICC WTC final.
The victory in the final match of the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy saw the Australian national cricket team win the series by a 3–1 margin. The team led by Pat Cummins outclassed the Indian national cricket team on most occasions in the series and won the Trophy for the first time after 2014-15.
The Australian National Cricket Team did not have a good start to the series as they lost the opening match at the Optus Stadium in Perth by a huge margin. However, after that, they made a strong comeback in Adelaide and won the match by 10 wickets. The third game ended in a draw before the home side brought their best.
The team led by Pat Cummins was right on the money at the Melbourne Cricket Ground where they took command of the series as they won the match by 184 runs. Then it was the last clash in Sydney, where they completed a sensational 6-wicket win to claim the series.
India opted to bat first and in difficult batting conditions, they managed just 185 runs. Rishabh Pant (40) was the team’s leading run-getter while captain Jasprit Bumrah’s (22) late blitz ensured they had a fighting total on the board.
With the ball, India were at their best as they bowled fantastic lines and lengths and troubled the Australian national cricket team batsmen from the start. Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Nitish Kumar Reddy were among the wickets as they bundled out the hosts for 181, taking a 4-run lead.
In the second innings, India put in a positive effort with the bat as they looked to score runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal (22) and KL Rahul (13) gave the team a solid start, but after that, they lost quick wickets and were under pressure. However, it was Rishabh Pant who rescued the team from trouble.
The wicketkeeper-batsman hit a brutal half-century and ended the quickfire innings with 63 runs. However, apart from him, no other batsman could get going as the Australian national cricket team bundled out India for just 157 runs, setting themselves a target of 162 runs to pursue
India ran out of Jasprit Bumrah in the second innings, and it surely cost them. Australia got off to a good start to the chase with Sam Konstas (22) and Usman Khawaja (41) adding 39 runs for the opening partnership.
India staged a slight comeback with quick wickets but Travis Head (34*) and Beau Webster (39*) combined to take their side home to win the game by six wickets and seal the series by 3 -1.
When Beau Webster hit the gains, Australia’s dressing room was left in tatters. The likes of Steve Smith, Pat Cummins, Marnus Labuschagne and other players were in high spirits as they celebrated aggressively.
