Austin Butler Enjoying making his own stunts – and sometimes he pays the physical price.
Butler, 34, remembered shooting the iconic combat scene in 2019’s One turn at Hollywood That ends with his character, Tex Watson, is barreled to kick past Brad Pitt‘s cliff booth and its pitbull, brandy.
“In rehearsals, I found it in such a way that it ripped my Rotator,” said the actor The health of men In Tuesday’s episode, August 19, “Stunt School” seriesRemembering how the dog attacked him in real life.
“I’m coming in the house and I’m holding a gun on betrayal. Due to the camera angle they wanted me to hold the gun with my left hand,” Butler remembered the scene. “Then the dog, it’s supposed to jump off the chair and grab my left arm.”
Butler was wearing a sweatshirt in a rehearsal, but said the team “wrapped my hand in leather so that this 80 lbs pitbull can get on my arm and tear on me.”
Because the Pitbull was tearing his left rotator, when he came to the shooting day he swapped arms.
“It was very strong. And so then we did it on the right arm on the day,” explained Butler. “And I realized I needed to hold tightly, otherwise it’s going to tear my arm off.”
Fortunately for Butler, his stunt is double, Braxton McAllisterHe took one to the team and filmed the part of the fighting where the dog bites a tex in the AFL.
In retrospect, Butler said the director Quentin Tarantino Initially, the fighting imagined “much longer,” as the central moment Tex and fellow Manson family members go into Cliff and Rick Dalton accidentally (Leonardo DiCaprio) home instead of their proposed victim, the late actress Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie).
“When we arrived there, he said (Tarantino), ‘You know what? It doesn’t make sense for you to be a good fighter,'” Butler remembered. “The character of Brad, like, a special forces guySo if he can’t get you out quickly, then he doesn’t feel right. “
The scene, which turns on the murder of Tate real -life and six others in 1969 by Charles MansonFollowers in Los Angeles, was cut short – but still packing a punch. (Manson, for his part, died in 2017 at the age of 83 in serving nine life sentences for his role in arranging the seven murders.)
“One turn at Hollywood Was to realize a dream in so many ways, ”said Butler.“ I was able to do many different fun things in this movie. “
As well as making many of his own stunts, Butler enjoyed being able to ride horses – including a fun scene to start his time as a tex.
“The day Quentin cast me, he said, ‘You know I’ve had this idea where you pull off this horse,” said the actor, noting that what the viewers don’t see for that moment is that he “riding on concrete for about half of the take.”
Butler was warned that “horses have little pull on concrete” so the Stunt team told him for “just taking him 50 percent” on what he took, but Tarantino, 62, showed before they pushed “action!”
“I kicked that horse and we went as fast as we could possibly,” Said Butler with laughterNoting that his father -cu was taught to ride. “Seeing a smile on his face made me happy.”
