Rohit Sharma‘s fights with the bat in the Ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy have intensified speculation about his imminent retirement from Test cricket.
A report in the Times of India (TOI) claims that the Indian captain has decided to quit the longest format of the game after the conclusion of the Sydney Test.
Rohit’s recent form has been a cause for concern. With just 31 runs in five innings in the series, his average has plummeted, raising questions about his continued place in the Test team.
The captain’s decision to experiment with the batting order in Melbourne, going up top and shuffling KL Rahul i Ravindra Jadejahas also drawn criticism. These tactical decisions have not produced the desired results and have hampered the team’s progress.
The Indian captain shared his disappointment with the team’s performance at the MCG and the 184-run defeat, but expressed hope for a strong comeback in Sydney.
“There’s still one game to go. One series to draw. A draw would be nice. We’ll try to see what we can correct. We just want to not give up and make sure we do everything we can to move the momentum back to us. There there are times when we’re disappointed with ourselves but we’ve done a lot of things right. There’s another chance to show up in Sydney.” he said in the post-match presentation.
Rohit also spoke about his own form. “I’m where I am today. Few results didn’t go our way as captain and the batsman is disappointing…mentally it’s unsettling. But from now on it’s where it’s at and there’s things we’ve got to look at as a team.” he added.
While an official announcement on Rohit’s retirement is awaited, the 37-year-old is believed to play his final Test match in Sydney. The team’s leadership now faces the crucial task of ensuring a smooth transition and identifying the next generation of leaders.
Rohit’s retirement will mark the end of an era for Indian Test cricket. While his captaincy has had its moments, his recent struggles with the bat have overshadowed his leadership qualities.
