Celebrations are underway in the Australian camp as is their team achieved a historic series win against India to end the away team’s decade of dominance and win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Amidst the appreciation of the entire cricketing community, the Australian captain Pat Cummins praised his team in a rare display of affection after the SCG Test win.
The Australian team’s journey to the Frontier-Gavaskar 2024-25 has been a rollercoaster of emotions and a test of the team’s temperament. The home side were dominated by India in Perth after the visitors declared their second innings at 487/6 and restricted the Aussies to 238.
The home team bounced back in the second Test, a day and night clash between the two teams in which the Australian team eventually came out victorious again. A turning point in the series came in Brisbane as Australia came close to victory but a valiant effort by the Indian tailenders and rain interruptions saved the visiting side and the match ended in a draw.
From there, the Australian team never looked back in the series as they battled back in Melbourne to seal a Boxing Day Test match win and dominate India in the final Test to end the his decade of dominance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
The Australian skipper lauded his side’s heroic drive and highlighted the effort his team had put in to seal a historic series win. Cummins pointed to the need to not change anything significant after their defeat in Perth, which became a difference-maker throughout the series.
“I think the most important thing is that you don’t change. Of course after a loss like that (in Perth), you re-evaluate where you are. But we’re really happy with how most of the guys went. I thought we had a bad week, but I thought our game plans, methods, selection, everything was pretty much where we wanted to be, just maybe our execution was a little off.” Cummins commented.
With a 3-1 series win, Australia have clinched a place in the championship ICC World Test Championship Finalwhich will be celebrated in June this year in the house of the Lord. The Aussies will be keen to defend their Test club which they won after defeating India in the final of the last cycle against a certain south africa who have already saved themselves a place in the WTC final.
Cummins, noting his team’s desire to remain Test champions, further emphasized the importance of the trophy to the team and emphasized the need to keep the Test mace in Australia’s trophy cabinet.
“It’s huge for us. We talk a lot about the World Trials Championship. You know, it’s the trophy that we’re very proud to have. So we want to go back and defend it. I think it’s a great tournament because you have to play well consistently and in all different conditions against different teams and yeah, it’s great to be back, I can’t wait to get there.” Cummins elucidated.
Australia have yet to play against Sri Lanka in the current WTC cycle. A series win for the Aussies can put them at the top of the WTC rankings ahead of the clash against South Africa.
