Day 1 of fifth Test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground witnessed a moment of brilliance from Australia’s star player Steve Smithwho took an extraordinary catch to dismiss India all out Nitish Reddy. After the catch, Smith couldn’t resist trolling the umpire. The troll was a gleeful response to an earlier incident earlier in the day in which the third umpire overturned his catch of Virat Kohli
In 57, Scott Boland he bowled a short-length ball just outside off, tempting Reddy to a lead. Placed at second slip, Smith darted to his right and caught the ball delicately, making the dismissal look like a textbook slip pull drill. Reddy’s dismissal for a golden duck added to Boland’s fiery spell and left India scrambling.
Smith’s joy after Reddy’s dismissal came with a playful jibe at the umpire, referencing an earlier incident in the day, as in the eighth over to add drama to the early stages of the innings of the India Boland’s delivery, a cut back ball, caught Kohli’s edge as it progressed. The ball was low, and it looked like Smith had caught it cleanly in the gully.
However, the third umpire’s detailed review revealed slight contact with the pitch, resulting in a ‘not out’ decision. The incident prompted animated reactions from both teams and amplified the already electric atmosphere at the SCG. Seizing the moment after Reddy’s catch, Smith humorously gestured that he was “clean and out”, adding a touch of levity to the high-pressure match.

Kohli’s break was short-lived as Boland again claimed his wicket in the 32nd over. Persisting with his probing lines outside off, Boland bowled a back ball that Kohli hit, only to end it at third slip. Beau Websterstationed in position, he darted to his left to complete a strong catch, sending Kohli back to the pavilion for 17 runs off 69 balls. Kohli’s dismissal marked a turning point.
