In a pivotal move ahead of the fifth and final Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground, reports have emerged indicating that Dhruv Jurel is set to replace Rishabh pants as India’s wicketkeeper. This decision comes after Pant’s disappointing performances and constant fitness concerns during the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Pant’s form has come under scrutiny, having scored just 154 runs in four matches at an average of just 22. His results throughout the series have been inconsistent, with innings of 37, 1, 21, 28 , 9, 28 and 30. The performance has led to growing speculation about his place in the starting eleven for the upcoming Test against Australia. The Indian team management seems to be seriously weighing their options, given that Pant’s recent outings have not lived up to expectations.
Instead, horse mackerel has presented a compelling case for selection. He recently put in impressive performances for India A against Australia A at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, scoring consecutive fifties with innings of 80 and 68. His ability to handle fast bowling and difficult pitch conditions have positioned him as a strong contender for the role of goalkeeper. Despite the limited opportunities at international level – having played only one test this season where he scored 11 and 1 – Jurel’s national form has been remarkable. He also scored 93 runs for Rajasthan in the Irani Trophy against Mumbai, showing his potential as both a wicket-keeper and a middle-order batsman.
While Jurel may not possess the same explosive batting style as Pant, his reliability could provide much-needed stability to India’s middle order. According to reports, the team is looking at options that can improve its performance in conditions that favor seam movement and bowling.
