Announcing the decision to postpone some tariffs for Mexico for another month, US President Donald Trump was in pain to praise his Mexican counterpart Claudia Sheinbaum.
“I did it as a housing and, respecting, President Sheinbaum,” he wrote on his social media site “Truth Social”. “Our relations were very good, and we work together at the border.”
The comments were in sharp contrast to the language he used for the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudu, whom he continues to call the “Governor Trudge” by calling to Canada “51 -Y staff”.
The war of the words – if not yet trade – continues between Canada and Trump administration with the Prime Minister Trudu, calling all the tariff policy “dumb” and the US Ministry of Finance Scott, calling it a “numbul” in return.
The difference in the tone between the US neighbor to the north and that south can hardly be more amazing.
Some, especially in Claudia Sheinbaum’s camp, see it as a testimony to her agile treatment of the unpredictable leader in the White House, the one who made some bold statements about his intention, just to be rolled or watered.
Certainly, President Sheinbaum from the very beginning delivered a single message: Mexicans should “remain calm” over Trump, “she said, insisting that” more cool heads will prevail. “
In this sense, it was still so good for the Mexican leader.
Twice, two months later, she managed to get rid of the proportion of 25% of the Mexican goods tariffs after the last minute call to President Trump-Hati said that there was no place for negotiations.
It is a testimony to her diplomacy that Trump seems to be genuinely evaluating her tone, clarity and general behavior in her interactions.
She refused to publicly accept that Mexico did not do enough in any of the main border issues that Trump requires the neighbors: Fentanyl trade and unregistered immigration to the north.
It started the morning pressbird on Thursday, citing new US Customs and Border Defense Agency, which shows that Fentanyl’s cramps fell to 263 kilograms, their lowest level in 3 years. It is a 75% drop in the last six months of its presidency.
When the tariffs avoid in February, Sheinbaum agreed to deploy 10,000 troops to the US and Mexico.
Its administration is also extradited (although they prefer the word “lined”) 29 Cartel Drug Figures The US will face a court on charges of murder to money laundering, including Rafael Kara Quinger’s Chief Lord, which has been searched by US authorities since the mid-1980s.
This may have been measures that Trump meant when he said that both countries work together on border size security.
In addition, she often threw the ball back toward the US president.
Whence the weapons come from where the cartels come from, she rhetorically asks, openly calling the US to make more to restrain the stream of weapons south and resolve its demand for illegal drugs. Drugs can come from Latin America, she emphasizes, but the market of their consumption in the US is preferably.
Even when the Trump administration recently appointed six Mexican cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations” seemed to strengthen her hand.
All because its administration is currently involved in a legal battle with American weapons manufacturers from the negligence. If American weapons manufacturers allowed their products to get to terrorists rather than ordinary criminals, Mexico may expand their lawsuit, she said to include a new charge in “complicity” with terrorist groups.
And while President Sheinbaum enjoys a strong beginning of his presidency – both domestically and in the eyes of the world – because her appeal with Trump should emphasize that this is the first days in bilateral relations.
“I think she played in her hand, she was pretty good,” said my Mexican economist Valeria. “I’m not sure it’s time for the celebration. But I think she did everything that could be before the threat of tariffs. It makes it much sense that any side enters the trade war.”
The key to the success of Sheinbaum seems to be refusing to retreat on unreasonable requests or issues that are of real importance, not similar to the White House’s requirements.
This is a difficult way to pass.
On some issues – the Mexican Bay, which is renamed Trump Bay of AmericaFor example, she can afford to remain higher, knowing that most people around the world are unlikely to bring his preferred terminology.
On others, especially tariffs, the rates are much higher; There is a danger that the constant back and instability in this issue can push the Mexican economy to the recession.
The Mexican Peso re -weakened during this last episode, and although Sheinbaum claims that the country’s economy is strong, the markets clearly preferred more reliable and strong relations with the US. In the end, Mexico remains the largest trading partner of the United States.
When I talked to President Sheinbaum last year, shortly before she went into history, becoming the first woman of Mexico, she said she would not have problems with the Trump’s second presidency and that she would always “protect” what was right for Mexicans – including millions living in the US.
“We must always defend our country and our sovereignty,” she told me.
With so much blur between these three neighbors in recent days it is easy to forget that Trump’s presidency is only six weeks.
New relations with the White House must go a long way, and next year the USMCA trade agreement will be revised. But, of course, against the background of the entire political theater, Claudia Sheinbaum will be more satisfied than Justin Trudu with how it started.
