For many Saturday, it’s look forward to the relaxed times that enjoyed family and friends. But Elizabeth Young “fear” them. This is a weekly reminder of the violent murder of her daughter Jada in Westfield -Bondi.
“On a wonderful autumn day, to find out what your daughter died, stabbed a wide daylight, died among colleagues -unusual buyers … (if she) lived, breathing, only an hour ago … These are the nightmares, parallel to the universe,” said Elizabeth in a massacre.
“The moment (the attacker) accidentally plunged into this knife in nephritis, our ordinary life was broken.”
On the last day of the five -week root investigation, on April 13 last year, her pain was repeated by families of other victims who gave emotional testimony.
The study sought to understand how a 40-year-old man in Queensland with a long history of mental illness was able to enter the popular Sydney shopping center on Saturday and kill six people, injuring 10 others, including a nine-month-old child.
The court heard the hours of evidence of dozens of witnesses – doctors, those who survived, victim families, police – trying to find out how, or if Australia could prevent such a tragedy repeat.
“It seems to me that my daughter and five other people were killed by cumulative failures of the number of people in a number of erroneous systems,” said Elizabeth Novy South Wales (NSW) Coronists.
It was a soft, brilliant day – the first day of school holidays – when Joel Kauchi entered the spreading shopping center, minutes from the most famous beach in Australia.
A little up to 15:33 local time (GMT) Kauchi took 30 cm to his backpack and stabbed his first victim, 25-year-old Dawn single.
For three minutes, he mortally attacked five more – 27 Iksian Chen; Jade Young, 47 years old, Ashley is good, 38; Faras Tahir, 30; and Pikria Darchia, 55. Kauchi also injured 10 others, including Good Baby daughter.
At 3:38 pm, five minutes after the rampant began, Kauchi was shot dead by Amy Scott’s police officer who worked nearby and arrived at the center about a minute earlier.
According to the news about the murder, Kauchi’s parents recognized their son on TV and called the police to warn them about their serious mental health problems.
Jaida Young’s family also faced images of her on TV, describing the horror request when watching a video showing her “lifeless body.” Similarly, Julie Singleton, whose daughter died, stood in the bakery line, heard her daughter called the radio victim before her body was even officially identified, and other relatives reported.
The scenes in Bondi directed strike waves across the country where mass murder is rare, and pushed to accelerate the wrath and fear of women, in particular. All, with the exception of two of 16 victims, were women, including five of the six people who died.
The main focus of the investigation was the study of several interactions that were cauts with police and mental health specialists in a few months and years leading to attacks.
The study heard that Kauchi once was a bright young man with a promising life ahead. His family says he was a gifted student and attended a private scholarship school before transferring his class at university.
At the age of 17, in 2001, Kauchi was diagnosed with schizophrenia and soon began taking medication for his condition.
After a decade of managing him in the public health system, Kauchi began regular classes with a psychiatrist Dr. Andrea Baravlyak in his hometown of Toowoomba in 2012.
In 2015, he complained about the side effects of the drugs, so Dr. Boros-lacquers began to gradually reduce the click-used dosage for the treatment of schizophrenia, after the second opinion in another psychiatrist, heard the investigation.
She said she completely separated him from Klozin, and Kauchi also stopped taking the medicine to treat the obsessive disorder a year later, she said.
In 2019, for the first time in 15 years, Cauchi was no longer engaged in anti -psychotic drugs. Dr. Boros-lavies, admitted, no other opinion about the complete termination or the drug was searched for drugs.
The study heard from healthcare providers who said that in most cases patients who come out of anti -psychic drugs go to another rather than stop treatment.
For several months, Kauchi’s mom contacted her psychiatrist with a concerned mental state of his son, finding notes indicating that he believes he was “under Satanic control”. At about the same time, Kauchi developed what Dr. Boros-Lavev said that the investigation was “intrusive interest in porn”. She wrote the recipe but told the investigation to decide whether he would start taking medication again.
In 2020, Kauchi left the family house, moved to Brisbane and stopped seeing Dr. Boraz-Lavak.
At this time, after almost two decades of treatment, Kauchi did not have a regular psychiatrist, did not engage in medication to treat his schizophrenia and did not live nearby.
The request heard that he started looking for a weapon license by contacting Brisbane’s three doctors for a medical certificate to maintain his application. They either did not ask for access to his medical files, or did not give all his story to Dr. Boros-Lavak, who said that if they needed additional information, they could ask her. The third doctor gave the Kauchi design that he was after, but he never applied for a gun, the court said.
Meanwhile, the cauts have increasingly contacted the police. After moving to Brisbane, he was dragged three times for the wrong. In 2021, the officers were summoned to the Kauchi unit in Brisbane after the residents heard a man shouting and knocking.
In 2022, Cauchi was reported to the police after calling the girl’s school to ask if he could come and observe how students swim and play sports. The officers tried to call the cauts but could not get to it.
In January 2023, Kauchi returned with his parents to Tuvumba and called on the police to complain that his father had stolen his pig collection. At this time, his mother caused concern with the officers, saying he should return to medication.
Authorities cannot detain people for mental health reasons if they did not risk themselves, and since the officers appreciated the cauts, they did not correspond to this description, they left, heard the court.
After the call, one of the police officers sent a letter to the internal police mental health coordinator asking Cauchi. However, the electronic leaf was noticed because of the insufficient amount.
A few months later, Sydney police found that Kauchi was sleeping roughly near the road after being summoned by the interested passers -by.
Until 2024, the mental health of Kauchi deteriorated, he was homeless and isolated from his family.
The study looked closely at the treatment of Kauchi’s mental health in Queensnd, and the panel of five psychiatrists were considered.
They found that Dr. Boros-lacquers missed the opportunity to return it to anti-psychotic drugs, one member of the board said that “did not take seriously enough”, the concerns of the Kauchi’s mother in late 2019.
The panel also testified on the request that Kauchi was “Floridal psychotic” – in an active part of the psychotic episode – when it entered the mall.
Asked by a lawyer who assisted the coroner, Dr. Boros-Lavtsov emphasized: “I did not fall in my care of Joel.”
Earlier, she told the investigation that she believed that Kauchi was not psychotic during the attack and that the medicine would not interfere with the tragedy.
Dr. Boros-lavies said the attacks could be “because of his sexual disappointment, pornography and hatred of women.”
But the next day, she responded to these evidence, saying it was just a “assumption”, and she was unable to evaluate the mental state of Kauchi without treating him since 2019.
However, the investigation is investigating whether Cauchi or groups is oriented.
For Peter Young, brother Jada, the answer seemed clear. “It is fueled by his disappointment if he did not find a” pleasant “girl to get married,” his “quick hunting found 16 victims, 14 of whom were women,” he said in the investigation.
The NSW police commissioner said on days after the attack that the detectives were “obvious” that the criminal focused on women.
However, during the investigation, Andrew Paul Marx Murder said he did not believe that there was evidence that the ducks were specifically aimed at women.
In the investigation, they also heard about a number of failures or not far from the safety, police, paramedics and the media responded to the attack.
It was said that the set and pressure on the security provider means that the operator of the center was not “competent”. At the moment when the duck stabbed his first sacrifice, the room was unattended when she was at the break in the toilet.
The guard of the Pacterus Tahir, the only man, the victim, worked on the first day at work when he killed, trying to stop the cauts, raising questions on the powers and the defense provided by the staff like him.
His brother, Muzafar, told how the phase died “proudly as a hero” and acknowledged that Kauchi’s parents lost his son: “We know that this tragedy is not their fault.”
The contractor responsible for safety at the shopping center has since updated its preparation and policy, as well as imposed stabbing vests for guards.
Several families have criticized the media after the attack, telling the request that it hoped that the industry reflects on how they should report sensitive stories, so that no further injuries of the victims are injured.
After a few weeks of evidence, the investigation was postponed on Thursday, when it is expected to give its recommendations by the end of the year by the end of the year.
At the beginning of the investigation, O’Savalian stated that the hearings were not in the one who was guilty of the attacks, but in “determining potential opportunities for reform or improvement to allow such events in the future.”
“I want families to know that their loved ones would not be lost in the process.”
Elizabeth Young, however, told the court, for her “nothing good” will come from the investigation.
“At the age of 74, I lost their way in my life,” she said, describing the crippled impact of the killings.
But she said that the action to make the country was already obvious to her.
“My daughter was killed by an immense, chronic schizophren … who had a knife intended for murder.
“(This) is another cry to Australia, which does not want to admit that what has happened … in fact, is a catastrophic consequence of the years of neglect and within our mental health systems.”
