One of the oldest and hardest rivalries in English football will play in the Far East tomorrow when Arsenal and Tottenham meet in Hong Kong.
It can only be a preseason friend, but neither part will want to lose in front of his neighbor in northern London and should be an intense occasion at the Kai Tak Stadium.
The pre-party compliments have been flowing both ways with the new Spurs chief, Thomas Frank, describing the Arsenal as “one of the best teams in the world.”
The Dane added: “In this way it will be a great test, but it is more than a test, because against Arsenal, it is not only kind. Of course, it is a game that we will do our best to win.”
Frank has not had much time to implement his ideas after succeeding Ange Postecoglou in Spurs, but Arsenal’s head, Mikel Arteta, is intrigued to see how the former director of Brentford will come out.
He said: “I respect Thomas Frank immensely. And with him and Spurs I think tomorrow we will begin to see the direction he will do with the team, implementing his vision, his philosophy and, of course, we have to focus on what we want to do, what we want to achieve, and I’m sure it will be a great game.”
Arsenal has won its two preseason games before the Far East, against AC Milan and Newcastle, and Arteta is excited to face foreign spurs.
He added: “(I think) it is a great idea to bring the tradition of football, a rivalry, but at the same time to do it in a completely different country. I think it is bright.
“I think it is an opportunity for everyone to hear it and, for us, because for our preparation the competition level again increases and it is a different challenge for the game and they will be lucky enough to play in this incredible stage with 50,000 people that I am sure they will be very strong and passionate.”
Arsenal will decide tonight if Viktor Gyokeres striker will be given his debut.
Gabriel Jesus remains on the sidelines, while Riccardo Calafieri is unlikely to risk after a muscle injury against Newcastle.
Max Dowman, 15, will start again on the bench.
Noni Madueke incorporated an initial amount of £ 48 million in Chelsea in early July, but is not involved because the England striker is allowed for additional rest time after his participation in the 2025 Club World Cup.
Tottenham player James Maddison is training again after suffering a knee injury to the end of last season and could be aligned with Dominic Solanke, who lost last weekend matches against Wycombe and read as a precaution.
Destiny Udogie, Kota Takai, Manor Salomon, Radu Dragusin, Dejan Kulusevski and Bryan Gil have not traveled to the Far East due to injuries.
