I hate longing because we all look at the past through rose -colored glasses, and most of the time revisit the things we love breaking down the illusion of how things were better ”back in the day because they were not really. We were just kids and we didn’t have significant responsibilities or people depending on us, so we long for the days where things were also simpler. Losing their minds over the same things we disappear today that we’ve all grown up. So when I went in to watch A24’s Y2k.
I was so wrong in my assessment because not only is Y2k A nuclear bomb of pointless longing, he is completely ruthless in his self -awareness, which allows him to make fun of the audience at the same time, let them go in on the joke, and then press into the joke so hard that he stops being funny, but only before coming back 10 times harder for you to be really respiratory over how respiratory is an idiot.
At least this was my experience.
I’m going to give you the most basic decline Y2kAnd why I think it works because it is structured in such a way that I can let you come in on the mechanics of the film without ruining some of the big revelations.
A group of friends try to crash a New Year’s Eve party in 1999. At midnight, every hell breaks free when every party in the party goes on a murder spree; Toast, mixers, VCRS … you name the technology, and probably grab, grind up, or cut the faces of a bunch of innocent teenagers in the most cruel ways possible.
A Sensory Macintosh computer absorbs other close tools and grows into a bot bot that hunted children down through the woods as if it were Jason Voorhees.
A girl who incorporates every nerd technology trope from the 90s (think Hacker) Knowing everything about main frames, malicious software, and knowing exactly how to pull down the robot’s rebellion because she designed the school’s crappy website … or something.
Lot of Limp Bizkit.
As I said, it’s all so incredibly stupid, but that’s the point.
Without a right -context (grow up in the 90s, or at least be aware of what children were in if you were an adult), Y2k’s Humor will be lost on you, and that’s fine. But if you’re in on the joke you will realize that all Simpsons A reference and technological film trope comes from the decade that inspired this film being fulfilled to perfection.
Of course VCR, not connected to the internet, can gain a feel because it simply sits near something that is connected to a modem. Of course Skateboards destroy the youth. And I know that I said no spoilers, but Of course Fred Durst will wear his Red Yankees cap back as if he was Thor himself reunited with his hammer because count day has begun and we need an unimaginable hero to help lead the human opposition against the robot’s rebellion.
That’s right, we basically have a modern version of Mall cutting Technology along with some very thick NU metal riffs, which makes it all feel like the entire production is sponsored by Jolt Cola.
The best way to describe Y2k In the letter of self -conscious love to the nostalgia of the 90s designed for people who completely hate this sort of thing. While watching Y2k.
Listen, you’re either going to love Y2k Or completely hate it, which is right. But if you’re of a certain age, long for the good old days but can’t pass your own cynicism, and you need a good laugh at your expense because the only way you know how to feel emotions is by self-flag, then you’re in for such a feast.
And for everyone who hates this movie … I understand. I know full well that this is the smallest film I’ve seen in about a decade, but it’s so satisfactory to watch what starts like a generic post-future teen scream Movie get off the rails so fast and continue to falsify its own path rudely as it completely demolishes your expectations with every scene that passes while each character plays it completely straight.
Y2k is thus Dumb and over the top, but is not trying to be anything else. And for that, he has my infinite respect because I have never laughed so hard on a sci-fi “Excitement” in a very long time.
From this writing you can stream Y2k on max.
