Speaking to journalists one day before the start of the Testing series between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Angelo Mathews said that retiring from the red ball cricket in the same enclosure (Galle International Stadium) where he made his debut in 2009 and played his hundredth test is a pleasant coincidence.
He added that one of the main reasons for the test cricket departure after the series’s workshop is the lack of red balls of Sri Lanka Play. Elaborated (as Cricbuzz cited):
“It’s a coincidence. I debuted in Galle. I played my hundredth tests in Galle. And I’m going to say goodbye -Gallery. The main reason is that we don’t have a lot of games. After that, our next test task is a year. It’s very long.
“I thought it is best to give an opportunity to replace me in the second test game because it will not have another opportunity until next year. And in a year, you will never know what could happen. So I thought I will play a game and then I will leave aside to let the other have their opportunity.”
Angelo Mathews, who scored 1416 runs and brought 45 doctors to T20is, said he would work very hard in his physical fitness to give -the opportunity to present -at the Men T20 2026 ICC and will completely retire from the Cricket after this event. He made:
“There are six more months until the next World Cup T20, and I will try it based on what my body tells me. I hope to retire from the white ball of the world in the World Cup. If we can win another World Cup, I will try to contribute to this. So I will do everything I can to improve my physical fitness and skills over the next six months.
“I am very happy. I couldn’t make a lot since 2016 because, from 2008 to 2015, I was playing in all formats as a whole round.
Angelo Mathews also said that the future of Sri Lanka’s cricket has a very brilliant appearance because the inclusion of Sanath Jayasuriya and Upul Tharanga in the configuration has led to immense team success. Said:
“The future seems bright. Since Sanath (Jayasuriya) took over, and Upul Tharanga and his team came in, communication has been excellent. Whether you are the elderly, young people or anyone else, they always communicate with us. This matters.
“Communication is key to having a good environment and will follow the performance. We have seen it. We have done very well in the test matches. We have even had the opportunity to be in the WTC final. And in hatreds and t20S, we have done very well in the last two years”
