You should use a similar, truncated practice before everyday interactions, recommends talking expert Alson Wood Brooks: Take 30 seconds before greeting another person to think about topics to go, the questions you want to ask or your goals for conversation.
Introduction to your random chats may make you look reasonable, prepared and attentive – as a good friend who remembers even a minute details of past conversations, – says Wood Brooks, Associate Professor of Harvard University, who teaches the MBA called “How to Talk Good in Business and Life.”
Try to prepare for even random conversations, let you meet with an employee for lunch or old friend for dinner, advise Wood Brooks. “Even if you call a friend you know well, or your mom, what we find in our study, this is that even 30 seconds of involvement will make this conversation improve,” she says.
A small moment of mental training can help you stay present when you talk and listen, says Wood Brooks, author of the 2025 book “Talk: The Science of Tournation and the Art to be yourself.” Once the conversation begins, you will have less brain power to come up with a conversation or spoken segctions, she adds.
“Once the conversation is going on, your brain becomes very busy … Listening to another person’s words, trying to read their emotional expressions, preparing what you are going to say next,” says Wood Brooks. “This is a very cognitively overwhelming task. We are better in the brainstorming what we have to talk about … before the conversation.”
Wood Brooks can help establish a relationship and push your career, but being good spoken, often takes constant practice.
