Growing up, I always did whatever my dad told me, but it was quite simple things that most regular children were expected to do. When the grass became too still in the backyard, I was asked to help with the lawn care, and if I wanted to go out with my friends at the weekend, I almost always got permission as long as my homework had done in a timely manner. That’s all to say that my dad, and still, is a very reasonable man, and I thank my lucky stars every day that I didn’t live in a version of 2001’s Guardian.
GuardianThe first appearance of Director Bill Paxton, looks horrific at the dynamics of a stressed family that only continues to get worse as time goes by because of supernatural forces, or, at least, a psychotic break in action. Unlike so many other psychological horror flicks that have come and gone since its release, you will find yourself knowing what happens far into their third act because Guardian plays his shining hand very close to his chest.
Guardian is framed as a series of backlashes reported by Fenton Meiks (Matthew McConaughey) to FBI Wesley Doyle’s Agent (Powers Boothe). Fenton, who traveled to Dallas, Texas to face the agent, admits that his brother, Adam, is the hardest serial murderer responsible for the murders known as the murders of God’s hands that occurred in his hometown, Thurman, Texas. Noting that Adam’s recent suicide is the catalyst for a long-lasting admission, Fenton is ready to face his past and offer closer to the cause.
Initially suspicious that Fenton tells the truth about the killings in GuardianWesley listens to his story, which ultimately gives him a reason to believe his claims because he is confidential to information about the serial murders that would not be known to the public.
Back in 1979, we are introduced to Young Fenton’s father (Matt O’Leary) and Adam (Jeremy Sumpter), simply known as father (Bill Paxton). According to every measure, Dad is a great dad who is very worried about his children, and does his best as a widow to make sure they have a great life. After an angel allegedly visited him in his dreams, Dad’s personality moves dramatically in Guardian.
While Adam seems to be in keeping with the grip and murder of human -looking citizens but who are supposed to be demons, Fenton is shaken to his core, and resists Dad’s instructions every step of the way. Cruelly punished for his iniquity, Fenton is tasked with the monolithic duty of digging a huge hole in the backyard that will act as dungeon and murder that would be hidden under the tool shed so that Dad can commit his heinous crimes. Believing sincerely that he fulfills God’s will, and is defended by the Lord in doing so, Father becomes increasingly violent as the body’s account begins to climb, using his sons as assistants to help remove the bodies.
Fenton’s report from his childhood to Wesley’s agent is a nightmare stuff at GuardianBut that is just the start of the tension as a viewer. While Fenton today clearly wants to help close the investigation with the information he has kept privately up to this point in his life, Wesley keeps him at arm’s length, and even keeps him when trying to put the pieces together through an appropriate police protocol. Fenton seems a little too comfortable convincing himself in the string of killings because even if he was an innocent child who was afraid of his life when his father went off the deep end, he was part of his actions at the end of the day.
While his narrative plays it 100 percent straight, Guardian continues to surprise you because fenton’s backlashes come from a sincere place, but it is also not every day that a growing man admits that he has an internal knowledge of a cruel string of unresolved murders that have been scared community for decades. As the story develops, you will be surprised with every time and time that is taken because Dad’s story may be more than he leaves.
Effective psychological horror flic by all measures, Guardian Will amaze you as it holds the answers to all the questions it raises until the moment is quite right.
