The new four -lane highway, which cut tens of thousands of hectares of Amazon tropical forest, is being built for the COP30 climate in the Brazilian city of Bel.
It is aimed at facilitating traffic to a city where more than 50,000 people will be held in November – including world leaders.
The state government advertises “sustainable” powers of the highway, but some locals and environmentalists are indignant at the environment.
Amazon plays a vital role in carbon absorption for the world and providing biodiversity, and many say that this fellow forest contradicts the very target of the climate summit.
Along the partially built road, the lush towers of the tropical forests on both sides are a reminder of what was there. In the cleared land, logs are high, which stretches over 13 km (8 miles) through the tropical forest in Belle.
The diggers and machines cut through the forest floor, laying the wetlands to turn the road that will cut through the protective area.
Claudio, who lives about 200 m from where the road will be. He made a profit from the collection of berries with trees that once occupied space.
“Everything was destroyed,” he says, pointing to the clearing.
“Our crop has already been cut down. We no longer have income to support our family.”
He says he has not received compensation from the state government and is currently based on savings.
It is worried that the construction of this road in the future will lead to more felling of forests, now that the area is more accessible to business.
“Our fear is that one day someone will come here and say, ‘Here’s a few money. We need this area to build a gas station or build a warehouse. “And then we will have to leave.
“We were born and raised here in society. Where are we going to go?”
Its community will not be related to the road, given its walls on both sides.
“For us, living on the highway side, there will be no advantage. For trucks there will be an advantage that will pass. If someone becomes ill and he needs to go to the center of Belema, we will not be able to use it.”
The road leaves two disabled areas of the protective forest. Concerned by scientists that this is to defeat the ecosystem and to disrupt wildlife movement.
Professor Sylvia Sardinja is a wildlife veterinarian and a researcher at the University Hospital of Animals, which goes to the site of the new highway.
She and her team rehabilitate wild animals with injuries that are preferably caused by people or vehicles.
After healed, they release them back into the wild – what, she said, will be more difficult if there is a highway on their doorstep.
“There has been a loss since the felling.
“We will lose the area to release these animals back into the wild, the natural environment of these species,” she said.
“Land animals will no longer be able to move to the other side, reducing the areas where they can live and multiply.”
The Brazilian president and the Minister of the Environment state that this will be a historical summit because it is “a police officer in Amazon, not a police officer about Amazon.”
The President states that the meeting will focus on the needs of the Amazon, show the forest to the world and present what the federal government did for its protection.
But Professor Sardinja says that while these conversations will take place “at a very high level, among business people and government officials” who live in Amazon, “do not hear”.
The State Government Coupled the idea of this highway known as Avenida Liberdade, back in 2012, but it was repeatedly postponed with ecological problems.
Many infrastructure projects for the city’s preparation for the police summit have now been included or approved.
Adler Silveira, the secretary of the state government’s infrastructure, listed this highway as one of the 30 projects in the city to “prepare” and “upgrade” it, so “we can have a legacy for the population and, more importantly, to serve people for COP30.”
Speaking to the BBC, he said it was a “sustainable highway” and “important mobility intervention”.
He added that he would intersects the wild to make the animals cross, cycling and sunlight. New hotels are also being built, and the port is being redone, so cruise ships can be combed there to accommodate unnecessary visitors.
The Brazil Federal Government invests more than $ 81 million (62 million pounds) to expand the power of the airport from “seven to 14 million passengers”. A new 500,000 square city park, Parque da Cidade, is built. It will include green spaces, restaurants, sports complex and other public use.
Some business owners in the huge Ver-O-Peso market in the city agree that this development will bring an opportunity for the city.
“The city is generally improving, it is repaired, and many people visit from other places. This means that I can sell more and earn more,” says Dalch Cardos to Silva, which manages the leather stall.
He says it is necessary because when he was young, Belle was “beautiful, well -groomed, careful, but he has been” abandoned “and” neglected “with” little interest in the management class “.
Joao Alexander Trindade to Silva, who sells Amazon phytotherapy in the market, admits that all construction work can cause problems, but he found that the future impact was worth it.
“We hope that discussions are not just on paper and will become true actions. And the measures taken are really implemented in practice, so that the planet can breathe a little better, so that the population in the future will have a little cleaner air.”
This will be the hope of world leaders who decided to attend the COP30 summit.
Attentive to whether thousands of them around the world are undermining, and the infrastructure required for their conduct is undermining the case.
