Shami has not donned the Indian jersey since the 2023 ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad where India were facing a heartbreak. Soon after, the Bengal pacer underwent ankle surgery, followed by a rehabilitation stint at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). After recovery, Shami marked his return to competitive cricket in November 2024, participating in domestic tournaments such as the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 and Vijay Hazare Trophy. His impressive performances across formats underlined his readiness for international cricket.
Despite his strong domestic outings, Shami was not included in India’s squad for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). The BCCI clarified that although Shami had recovered from his injury, he was deemed unfit to endure the rigors of a five-day Test match. However, the pacer’s recent workouts and his upbeat post suggest that he is gearing up for a return to white-ball cricket.
If selected, Shami is expected to feature in India’s three-match ODI series against England, starting later this month. The ODIs will follow a five-match T20I series, marking England’s tour of India. The bilateral series will serve as crucial preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025which will be held in Dubai. With India eyeing redemption on the global stage, having a seasoned batsman like Shami in their ranks could be a game changer.
