Indian national cricket team chief selector Ajit Agarkar spoke about the reason behind naming Shubman Gill as the vice-captain of the team for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He said that they always have an eye on the future while making decisions. .
The Indian National Cricket Team unveiled their squad for the ICC Champions Trophy on Saturday (January 18). The focus was on the team’s vice-captain, and it was none other than Gill, who was given the role of being Rohit Sharma’s deputy for the tournament.
Gill was added to the leadership group after the T20 World Cup 2024. He was asked to lead the team in the T20I series against the Zimbabwe national cricket team. And then he was appointed vice-captain of the white-ball teams for the tour to Sri Lanka.
Few reports claimed that Jasprit Bumrah would be named as the vice-captain of the team in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, especially after his heroics with the ball and as captain in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. But it wasn’t the case.
The selectors opted to back Shubman Gill in the role, and this hints that the batsman could step up to take over from Rohit Sharma once the batsman calls time on his career. Gill has undoubtedly been one of the top talents in the country.
While talking about Gill’s appointment as vice-captain, he said that the young batsman was vice-captain in Sri Lanka and they took the feedback from the dressing room to make the decision. Speaking to reporters, he explained:
“Gill has also been vice-captain in Sri Lanka,” said Agarkar. “You always want to be looking for leaders. I won’t look at it too much, but a lot of the feedback on those decisions comes from the locker room.”
Shubman Gill has undoubtedly developed into one of the team’s best openers in a short period of time. He has scored 2328 One Day International (ODI) runs in 47 innings at an average of 58.20. He will be extremely important for his team in ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as he bats at the top.
Shubman Gill, of late, has come under the scanner for his inconsistency. The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be a great opportunity for him to answer all his critics in style and help his team lift the title, where India will play all their matches in the UAE.
