After many years of peace, the shooting shocked the Colombians who still remembered political violence in the 1980s and 90s when several presidential candidates and influential Colombian figures were killed.
Uriebe was shot at the campaign on June 7, with an unverified video about murder widespread on the Internet.
Local media reports believe that after he was arrested, he shouted: “I did it for money for my family.”
The senator was a popular member of the right -wing Democratic Center and is looking for his party nomination in the 2026 presidential election.
His father, Miguel URIB London, announced his own presidential campaign earlier this week, that he said were efforts to preserve his son’s legacy alive.
Urbe London was a member of the City Council of Bogota at the end of the 80s and the Senator of the Colombian Conservative Party in the early 90s.
During this period of time, several presidential candidates were killed and influential Colombian figures, Including Hriebe’s mother’s mother, journalist Diana Turo.
In 1990, she was abducted by Los -Extradita, an alliance created by leading drug addicts. She was held hostage in five months before shooting during a rescue attempt.
Uriebe often called her his inspiration to run for a political position “to work in our country”.
