A sociologist warns that adult men not reaching key milestones is bad for society

One sociologist and author told CNN that he is concerned about the number of men in their 30s and 40s who are not buying homes or starting families.

“Of Boys and Men” author Richard Reeves spoke with CNN’s Michael Smerconish about the growing social dynamic in America, where a large proportion of men are not reaching the standards of adulthood their fathers achieved, including not having a home or having children.

“It shows a change, an important change, which is that these milestones are not just being reached later, but for many people, they are not being reached at all,” Reeves told Smerkonish, commenting on the recent Wall Street Journal article discussing this trend.

“And right now it seems that it’s the economic and social prospects of young people that are the big issue that we face,” he continued.

Citing the most troubling data he’s seen, Reeves said, “Yes, to me it’s the fact that now, men in their 30s and 40s who don’t have a college degree, half of them don’t have children in their home. .”

Reeves, who is also president American Institute for Boys and Menpointed out that the new dynamic is that men are not only waiting to reach these milestones, but not reaching them at all, and this is troubling.

“Taking a little more time to get an education, take your time to start a family, maybe settle down financially is probably a good thing, but that’s not what’s happening now. What’s happening now is that those milestones for a lot of people just aren’t attainable at all.”

Elsewhere he said: “To be honest, Michael, I wasn’t worried about this delay before. Now I’m worried about that because I really think we’re going from “It’s just happening later” to “It’s just not happening.”

In addition, he noted that men do not necessarily give up on these achievements, they feel that they cannot achieve them. “The evidence shows that actually men, in particular, still want to have children, they still want to get married, they still want to start families. They just can’t do it for some reason.”

“It is a mixture, as always, of economy and culture. It’s partly just, you know, young people feeling like they’re not doing as well economically as they should be,” Reeves said, adding that the current gender divide in society adds to this problem.

“A third of men under the age of 30 do not date. 24% of men in their 20s still live at home, as you just pointed out.’

Then the expert indicated where to start solving this problem. “We need to improve the economic prospects for young people – that is, if you are going to do one thing. So we need to have more investment in the education system that works for men,” he said, mentioning the promotion of vocational training, apprenticeships and wrestling with a fixation of men’s wages.

He also suggested, “We just need to lower the temperature around some of these cultural issues, some of these political issues that I think have really driven a wedge between a lot of young men and young, young women.”

Reeves pointed to one place society did not notice which compounds the problem by stating that “we haven’t created a culture where it’s easy enough for men and women to start these kinds of families, to buy a house, to start a life.”
