If you are wondering why apocalyptic sci-fi tossers are not often introduced through a documentary framework that focuses on real-life events and public figures, that’s because it leads to disasters like 2073; A film that has a clear message presented to is an audience in the most unattached way possible. As ambitious as this film can be, it is incredibly difficult to watch, and it highlights a unique problem: it is not allegorical, but rather also real to treat. I wish I was as original as Rotten Tomatoes Reviewer Glenn Dunks, who simply referred to this film as “Doomscrolling: The Movie,” because that’s exactly what 2073 Despite the promising thumb and summary you will find when looking to stream the title on Max.
I’m not crazy, I’m just disappointed, because though 2073 Categorized as a documentary and excitement film, there is, like a 10 percent, excitement film, if that, and the rest exactly the kind of things you will see when turning through your Instagram feed in panic in wondering how close we really are to the dystopian reality that we, according to the film, are fast approaching.
The future is a bleak place in 2073
2073 begins with a promise as it follows a lonely woman’s point of view that is simply called “ghost” (Samantha Morton). Living under a long -released shopping center with other condemned human beings, Ghost narratives explain how Fargone Society has come, and aims to tell the story of how humanity reached such a bleak destination. In a constant fear of being investigated and silenced (killed) by the government, dumpster spirits dive for food and supplies when it is safe to do so, and retreat underground to its dilapidated compound occupied by other survivors who are just as worse to wear.
And let me tell you, these post-apocalyptic scenes are absolutely shocking. I wanted to learn more about how society operates in the year 2073, and I’d love to see more of this. The hierarchy of power, the desire to redecorate the force so that they can overthrow their oppressors, and the state of constant vigilance through which society lives is charming, to say the least, and this fictional but unfortunate location is unfortunately fertile ground for some next level stories.
Well it went dark
The best part for 2073 Are the sequences set in the dystopian future that will fill any sensible viewer with an absolute sense of terror, and then suddenly the worst thing is ever happening: we get a documentary reminiscent of the Zeitgeist Film Series Fear who did a great job highlighting the dangers of the total government, or can present, or never try, or never do so, or ever. that is to introduce, or joint efforts to go on the right side of history and prevent such a bleak future from happening.
In other words, 2073 tries to be two different films: a dystopian sci-fi Excitement set in a non -far fictional future, and a documentary that uses real archival photos of today used to explain how this dystopia was created.
But it is in it.
While watching the documentary sequences that make up most 2073’s running time, I felt like Alex from Orange clock workwas forced to sit in front of TVs with his open eyes open so he could take all the pictures in on a scary scale. This type of distribution removes the secrets from the more interesting story – the fiction set in 2073 – which may have been used as a vehicle to offer solutions for a society driven underground by those powers.
Two different films failed in one
While i appreciate what 2073 Seeking to achieve, he left a bad taste in my mouth because he came off as if he was preaching to a choir that is already aware of the current situation, but who feels without a time to act in any meaningful ways to prevent things getting worse.
We already know that wealth is centralized in such a way that keeps the working class under his manager’s thumb. We already know that politicians and bros technology are sweeping humanity under the rug so that a few people in power can explore space while the rest of us suffer. We already know that chronic data mining billionaire and warts on -lein are a terrible combination for humanity because it suggests how artificial intelligence will soon control the force as it finds a way to become wiser than the human beings it aims to treat.
That’s all good and good, but what do we do about it? The interesting story – the story I wanted to see – is 2073 is how human beings in the future cope with social fall and set their sights towards a brighter future. What we get instead is a fast fire news feed from today that is beamed into our eye pellets as if saying “There’s nothing you can do about this,” and “we’re already destined.”
