The 18th century oil painting was allegedly damaged after the visitor stumbled during the selfies.
The Gallery of Uphysus Florence stated that the tourist fell back, trying to “make a meme ahead” portrait of Ferdinand de Medici, the Great Prince Tuscany, Anton Domenik Gabiani.
The museum explained that the damage could be quickly repaired, but director Simon Veda warned restrictions on visitors’ behavior in the future.
In his statement, he stated: “The problem of visitors who come to the museum to make memes or take selfies for social media.
“We will establish very accurate restrictions, preventing behavior that is not compatible with the sense of our institutions and respect for cultural heritage,” he added.
The portrait was demonstrated as part of an exhibition called Florence and Europe: the art of the eighteenth century in Uffizi.
According to the gallery, the visitor was identified by the police and reported to the judicial authority.
The exhibition, which consisted of about 150 arts, is now closed until July 2 after the incident. The picture will be repaired in the intermediate mode so that it is ready to return to the exhibition.
The exhibition will then run as planned initially, by November 28.
