The leader of the Togolez Farre Gnosingbe was sworn in as the “President of the Council of Ministers” – a new post, which is the highest position in the government’s executive power and has no official restrictions.
This stems from the constitutional reform that has completed the presidential election and presented the parliamentary system.
The opposition said the changes were in order to allow the president to remain in power for an indefinite period.
His family ruled the country for 58 years – Farre Gnosingbe took the post in 2005 from his father Gnosingbe Eyadem, who ruled for almost four decades.
This latest change stems from the new constitution approved by legislators last year, with the inscription of critics and opposition figures as an “institutional coup”.
The Gnassingbé government stopped some changes after a huge reaction, but went forward with its new role.
Municipal elections Tag in July will be the first in accordance with the new Constitution, which replaced the presidential system of parliamentary.
Theoretically, the role of the President of the Republic is now only the honorary title, but analysts say that the Gnosingbe power is more secured than when -with his new post of President of the Council.
His party, the Union of the Republic, won a major majority in last year’s parliamentary elections, taking 108 out of 113 seats in the National Assembly.
