Police in the Indian city of Mumbai have arrested a man in connection with a knife attack attack about Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, according to media reports
Khan was stabbed during a fight at his residence with an unknown person on Thursday morning. The actor is recovering from surgery.
Police have seized CCTV footage from the actor’s residence in the upscale Bandra area, and initial reports suggest the attack may have been a robbery attempt.
It is not yet known whether the man was detained as an attacker.
The BBC has obtained a police statement from a nurse working at Khan’s home, which details some of the events that took place on the night of the incident.
Eliama Philip, who looks after son Khan, said she first noticed the man’s shadow near the bathroom door late at night when she was in the baby’s room with the babysitter.
Ms Philip said a man appeared, holding a wooden object in one hand and a long blade in the other, and warned them not to make any noise. He demanded 10 million rupiah ($115,477; £94,511), she said.
A fight soon ensued, during which Ms. Philip was injured. Meanwhile, the nanny ran out of the room.
According to the nurse’s statement, Khan and his wife, actress Kareena Kapoor, rushed into the room after hearing the commotion. She said the intruder stabbed Khan when he confronted him and then fled the home.
As a result of the attack, Khan suffered several injuries – including on the back of his head.
Dr. Nitin Dange of Lilavati Hospital, where Khan is being treated, said that when the actor arrived, he was bleeding from his spine with a knife fragment. The fragment was removed surgically and the fluid leak was controlled. Doctors say that timely treatment prevented serious damage to the spine.
Dr. Dunge said Friday that Khan is “better now.”
“We got him to walk and he walked well. Looking at his parameters, his wounds and all other injuries, he can be safely removed from the intensive care unit. He should take some precautions. He should rest and be restricted in movement for a week,” he said.
Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police Dixit Gadam said the weapon used in the attack has not been found and that they have registered a complaint based on the nurse’s statement.
“The accused entered through the fire escape,” he said. “Enquiries are ongoing to establish how the door to the home was opened or how the intruder gained entry.”
Khan, 54, is also a producer who has starred in several films and TV shows over the years. He is known for his wit and humor.
His portrayal of the antagonist in the critically acclaimed 2006 film Omkara was critically acclaimed. He has received numerous awards, including the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award, in 2010.
Khan is the son of former Indian cricket captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi and actor Sharmila Tagore.
