Police in the Indian city of Mumbai have arrested a man in connection with a knife attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan last week.
Khan, one of India’s biggest stars, was with a knife by intruders in his home, in an attack that shocked the country. He is recovering from surgery.
On Sunday, police said they had arrested the main suspect, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, adding that he was a Bangladeshi national who was in India illegally.
Mr. Shehzad’s lawyer denied the allegations and said he was not from Bangladesh.
Police say they have arrested Mr Shehzad from Thane, a district on the outskirts of Mumbai.
Preliminary evidence suggests that he came to the city about six months ago and was working at a real estate agency using a fake name and identity card, Mumbai Police Deputy Commissioner Dixit Gedam told a news conference.
Police suspect that Mr. Shehzad allegedly broke into Khan’s home with the intention of robbing him, Mr. Gedam said.
On Sunday, a court in Mumbai remanded Mr. Shehzad to five days’ custody.
His lawyer Sandeep Shikhane, told reporters that his client is being made a “scapegoat.”
“There is no documentary evidence that he is a Bangladeshi citizen,” he said.
Khan’s attack made national headlines and raised questions about security in Mumbai, one of India’s most populous cities and its financial capital.
Khan was stabbed six times and suffered multiple injuries, including to the back of the head, during the attack on his home in the upscale neighborhood.
Eliama Philip, a nurse who works at Khan’s home, told police last week that she first noticed the man’s shadow near the bathroom door late at night when she was in the baby’s room with the babysitter.
Ms Philip said a man appeared, holding a wooden object in one hand and a long blade in the other, and warned them not to make any noise. He demanded 10 million rupiah ($115,477; £94,511), she said.
A fight ensued during which Ms. Philip was injured. She also said that after hearing the commotion, Khan and his wife rushed into the room and that the assailant stabbed the actor before fleeing.
This was reported by investigators on Friday detained – and later released – at least five more people for questioning in connection with the investigation.
Many of the men were arrested because they resembled the attacker, who was caught on CCTV leaving the building.
