New Year’s Eve celebrations were cut short for families after a Lego display of blob balloons collapsed in a crowded Massachusetts arcade.

Peabody Police Department confirmed in a Facebook post that several people were injured when a plastic Lego display fell from the mezzanine level at the In the Game arcade in Peabody.

According to the arcade’s Facebook page, they were hosting a “New Year’s Eve Noon Celebration” on Tuesday afternoon.

Peabody Fire Chief John Dowling told Fox News Digital that they received a call about a partial ceiling collapse in the arcade just after noon.

Upon arriving at the scene, Dowling said crews discovered it wasn’t a ceiling collapse, but a 12-foot-tall Lego display that fell on a group of people during a botched New Year’s Eve balloon drop.

Dowling said the balloons must have been released from the display during the party and that it appears a person pulled too hard on the display, causing it to fall.

Dowling said 10 people received minor injuries. Eight were taken to the hospital for medical treatment, and two refused medical treatment.

Of the eight who sought help, Dowling said three were adults and five were children who suffered mostly cuts and scrapes.

Lauren Turko, who attended the event with her family, reported WBZ-TV that it is “pure chaos”.

“We watched the ball go down and didn’t realize anything had happened until we were about to leave right after it went down,” Turco told WBZ-TV.

“Big LEGO pieces were everywhere, kids were crying, there were tons of people in the office, some with ice packs on their heads, and people letting their kids steal Lego pieces as souvenirs. It was pure chaos. I had no idea of ​​the actual events until the time of the incident,” Turco continued.

The arcade was closed as a precaution for a short period after the incident, but reopened shortly after.

A spokesperson for the arcade told Fox News Digital that they are cooperating with authorities as they assess the situation.
