A university student and a Palestinian activist arrested by the US immigration bodies worried that an American interview with citizenship was a trap.
Mohsen Mahdavi, who has a permanent residence in the US or a “green card”, was detained by American immigration and customs execution (ICE) when he addressed the appointment on Monday.
The day before his arrest, he told CBS News that he believed that the interview could become a setup.
“This is the first feeling I have been waiting for this for more than a year,” Mahdavi said. “And another feeling looks like a minute. Is this a honey trap?”
D -Mahdavi, a student of philosophy at the Colombian University in New York, who was a graduate next month, was Taken in the Kolchester, Vermont.
Mahdavi’s lawyer, Luna Drubia, said he was arrested “in retribution for propaganda on behalf of the Palestinians and from his personality as a Palestinian.”
“His detention is an attempt to silence those who oppose the atrocities in Gaza. It is also unconstitutional.”
The court file said that Mahdavi was born in a refugee camp on the West Bank and moved to the United States in 2014.
He characterizes him as a devoted Buddhist who believes in “Non -beaten and empathy as the central principle of his religion.”
Other university activists were also detained, including Colombian University Student Mahmoud Khalil and University Student Rames Osturk.
Shortly after Mahdavi was arrested, the federal judge in Vermon ordered him not to remove him. Mr. Khalil and Ms. Osturk were detained in the ice in Louisiana.
BBC contacted ICE for comments.
Mr. Mahdavi and Mr Khalil are the co-founders of the Palestinian Student Union of Colombia and actively acted in a protest rally in the city campus after Hamas attack in October 2023 and the next Israeli revenge.
Mahdavi’s lawyers stated that in March 2024 he “stepped back”.
In December, he interviewed with the 60 -minute CBS program, which accused Israel of genocide, the lawsuit she denies.
Last month, US Secretary of State Mark Rubio said at least 300 foreign students were recalled, trying to fight anti -Semitism on campus.
The protesters in the campus were denied anti -Semitism allegations.
“I want people to know that my sympathy would go beyond the Palestinian people. My sympathy is also for the Jewish people, as well as the Israelis,” said Mahdavi News, an American partner of the BBC, shortly before he was detained by ice agents.
On Tuesday, President Trump also suggested that US citizens could be detained and sent abroad, including Salvador Salvador.
Legal experts generally agree that such a step will be illegal in accordance with the US Constitution and the US legislation.
