Terence Crawford’s coach seeks story, while the fighter’s struggles themselves provide a more realistic perspective

Terence Crawford coach, Jacqui ‘Red’ Spikes, says that Crawford’s skills will allow him to overcome the size of Super Media’s Super -Delivery Champion in September 13.

Spikes uses Sugar Ray Leonard’s victory over Marvin Hagler and Oleksandr Usyk against larger enemies due to heavy weight as examples so that Crawford (41-0, 31 kos) will exceed his disadvantage of his size of defeating Canelo (63-2-2-2, 39 kos) in his stage-stage stadium contest.

There are two main differences between the Sugar Ray Leonard in defeating the WBC champion Middleweight Marvin Hagler and what Crawford does, jumping two weight classes to challenge Canelo for his four belts in 168:

1. Age: Leonard was 30 years old when he defeated Hagler by a controversial decision of division of 12 rounds on April 6, 1987. Crawford is 37 years old and will be 38 years old on September 28. It is much larger than Leonard. Bud is essentially eight years older than Sugar Ray when he struggled to Marvin for his middle weight belt of the WBC.
2. Weight class: Sugar Ray ascended only to a division of 154 to 160 by his confrontation against Leonard. Although Leonard began his career in 147, he moved to a half -junior weight before confronting in Hagler. He did not rise from 2 to 3 divisions, as Crawford does in his title challenge against Canelo.
3. Previous performance: In Leonard’s struggle before confronting Hagler, he had looked 24k in 154, defeating Kevin Howard by a ninth round on May 11, 1984, but Crawford did not seem dominant in his last struggle, debuting 154 against Israil Madrimov on August 3, 2024.

“Usyk is a smaller guy. He’s hit big boys with his boxing. The skills pay the bills,” said Spikes. “It’s just about preparing, having a good play plan and having the proper dog in the race.”

Oleksandr Usyk beat two faded British heavy weights, Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury, as well as the faulty Daniel Dubois. In my opinion, these fighters are not at the level of caneal talent and achievements. Alvarez’s curriculum has many more names than the three fighters. The best victory of Joshua and Fury is probably a Wladimir Klitschko Esvaget, who was 40 years old when he was fought.

“Madrimov was a complicated style. He did a lot of work. He did not commit. He had no patience. This is a completely different style than he would carry Canelo. So, Madrimov gave us some difficulty. He came to win. He came ready, but we overcome the obstacle,” said Spikes.

I think the reason Crawford fought with Madrimov was this:

• Inactivity: Crawford had been inactive for 13 months before the Madrimov crash. Terence’s struggle before it was against Errol Spence on July 29, 2023. Chronic Crawford’s chronic lagoons began in November 2021 when he fought against Shawn Porter. Prior to this fight, Crawford had last struggled in November 2020 against Kell Brook.
• Older: At the age of 36, Bud was beginning to show elderly signs. In any sport, this is a time when athletes begin to show a serious descent. There are not many fighters still competing at the age of 36. Those who can often do it with the way their experienced promoters maneuver.
• Weight jump: Until 154, Crawford showed that he had hit his roof physically and could not dominate the division of half young weight as he had done in the smallest weight classes. I think it is logical to assume that, if Terence had chosen to stay in 154, he would have repeatedly suffered defeats and had fallen to the package if he had fought against the highest fighters.
