“There are some huge struggles to wait.” Sugar “Núñez defends his title for the first time,” said promoter Eddie Hearn through Matchroom, talking about Sugar Nunez’s defense against Diaz.
Social media fans see this struggle as a first decent defense for Núñez (28-1, 27 kos) after he recently captured the 130-pound vacancy title with a 12-round unanimous decision on Masanori Rikiishi on May 28, 2025, in Yokohama, Japan.
Nunez-Diaz-Velez is considered a first Gimme defense for “Sugar” Nunez, and fans want to see that Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn advanced after a better opponent, such as Raymond Ford.
Diaz-Velez, 30, suffered a recent loss of unanimous decision of ten rounds to Henry Lebron on December 7, 2024. In the last struggle of Diaz, he defeated veteran Jose Antonio Meza (9-11, 2 kos) by a unanimous decision of eight rounds on April 18, 2025.
Prior to Diaz’s career, many fans were considered a potential world champion. It started with a 23-0 record and seemed impressive. However, Diaz was shot down on Earth for Masayuki Itto in a unanimou decision of 12 rounds on July 28, 2018.
Diaz’s career has not been the same since the defeat, as it has been hit by Shakur Stevenson, Emanuel Navarrete, Isaac Dogboe and Henry Lebron. The brightness is out of the Diaz race and its low ranking with the WBC at 130 reflects it.
It is a bit surprising that Hearn uses it as a challenger to “sugar” Núñez to defend himself instead of a higher classification contestant. The logic behind this movement may be due to the fact that Diaz was known to the boxing fans who have been following the sport since 2018. Many of them would remember Diaz during their best years, and may have seen their fights against Shakur, Dogboe and Navarrete.
“Sugar” Núñez has won his last 18 fights since he suffered his canvas defeat against career
Hiram Gallardo on June 29, 2018. It was a unanimous decision of six rounds.
#4 IBF contestant, Raymond Ford, thinks that “Sucre” Núñez is not interested in fighting him, saying X: “I don’t think Sugar Nunez wants to fight me. You walk in the park.” Núñez who chose to defend himself of Diaz-Velez would strengthen the vision that some fans have to be hooked on Ford.
