Davis was the mother of one of the children Vinbom, who sought to stop the shooting of his father.

“The forgiveness comes over time, and 33 years are a long time,” Kertysi Wind said in a statement. “I forgave my father.”

Relatives and friends of the three victims of the murder also released a joint statement stating that they still love and cared for Winboma, and that Florida officials told them they could do nothing to stop the shooting they held to prevent.

“33 years ago, Kurtis Wrew took our mother’s life Valerie Davis, Mary Lubin’s grandmother and dear family friend Johnny Lee,” the statement said. “Whether the events of this day, which made us the surviving victims of a violent crime, the relatives of the person who was confronted with the shooting, or both, we all lived our lives, dressing the label that Florida decided to determine and share us.

“Most of all, we continued to love and take care of Kertis,” he continued. “We celebrated the graduation and weddings over the phone. We brought his grandchildren to visit Florida’s state prison. We created ties despite business glass and cell strips. We forgave him.”

The statement added that they “will continue to reject the labels that we have given.”

“We are broken by the heart that Florida did not listen to our requests,” the statement said. “And we strive to continue to tell our story.”

Windom and his lawyers filed several appeals, claiming that he was represented by an incompetent lawyer, presenting evidence of fighting mental health.

The final appeal of Windem was rejected US Supreme Court Wednesday.

“Forgiveness and healing do not come from death in death. “They come from Kertis, building new relationships with the people he has suffered so much. They come, showing the new generation Windom that there is hope for a less tough future. His shooting has stopped today in his footsteps and replaced him with new pain.”

“The governor does not speak for all the victims’ families,” the group added. “Today’s performance was not about justice. It was about flexion of political muscles.”
