Shreyas Iyer has been the center of conversation again recently after Punjab Kings (PBKS) they named him captain of their team for the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). PBKS bought the 30-year-old for a whopping INR 26.75 crore in the latest auction after his triumphant run to win the prestigious league title with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).
The Preity Zinta-owned franchise now hopes that with Iyer as the captain, their team will take the season forward to achieve their first IPL glory.
Iyer has established himself as a hit IPL captain, leader in 71 matches with 40 wins, 31 losses and a commendable win percentage of 56.35. His leadership journey began with the Capitals of Delhiwhere he captained the team from 2018 to 2020, leading them to their first IPL final in 2020 and achieving a win rate of 56.09% in 41 matches. In the 2022 auction, he moved to KKR and quickly made an impact, guiding the team to their third IPL title in just his third season, with a win percentage of 56.70 in 30 matches. Notably, Iyer became the youngest captain in the IPL at 23 years and 142 days during the 2018 season. He also has the unique distinction of being the only captain to lead two different teams – Capitals in 2020 and KKR in 2024- in the final of the IPL.
Shreyas Iyer has been a prolific performer in domestic cricket, showing his class across all formats. In first-class cricket, he has played 80 matches, amassing 6,335 runs at an impressive average of 49.10, including 15 centuries and 33 half-centuries, with a highest score of 233.
In List A cricket, he has featured in 149 matches, amassing 5,909 runs with consistency and style. His outstanding performances in the 2024 season were instrumental in his team’s success. With success at the national level in 3 different competitions and an IPL title under his belt, Iyer clinched 4 titles in the previous year as captain of his franchise and national team.
