The author spoke, 47 Diane Sawyer During the special ABC Emma and Bruce Willis: the unexpected journeybroadcast on Tuesday, August 26. Emma said she “lost it” after the diagnosis and felt “so lonely” and “so isolated.”
Emma shared her to turn to experts for assisting in her husband’s own condition and mental health battles, and bringing in care donors to help tend to brush around the clock.
Now, she has focused on shining more light on the disease and treatment, finding a community of people who share a “ordinary thread” with her.
“That’s all this motivation for me to raise awareness of this disease, because we want families, we want people to be able to be diagnosed earlier, when they can take part in these trials,” he said, hoping that people remember the “rare disease that Bruce Willis has” and feel less alone in their quest for answers.
Emma revealed her to offer a list of tips for friends and family of the small, practical things that can help a care donor go all day.
“We are very fortunate to be able to afford care and many families cannot. Giving formal care is astronomical, yet they deserve every penny,” he said.
In March 2022, Bruce’s family – including Emma, his daughters, Raze. Scout. TallulahMabel and Evelyn, and ex-wife Demi Moore – announced his affasia diagnosis along with his retirement of acting.
“For Bruce’s amazing fans, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce had been experiencing some health issues and had recently been diagnosed with Affasia, which affects his cognitive abilities,” the family said in a statement at the time. “As a result of this and with a lot of consideration, Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much.”
The family acknowledged the “very challenging time” but emphasized that they “appreciate your love, compassion and ongoing support.”
The statement concluded: “We move through this as a strong family unit, and want to bring his fans in because we know how much it means to you, as you do to him. As Bruce always says, ‘Live It Up,’ and together we intend to do just that.”
Almost a year later the family divided Update on the state of Bruce.
“Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of Afasia in the spring of 2022, Bruce’s condition has moved on and we now have a more specific diagnosis: Dementia Frontotemporal (known as FTD),” they wrote in a statement in February 2023 through the Frontotemporal Society. “Unfortunately, challenges with communication are only one symptom of the disease that Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally be diagnosed.”
As Bruce fought against Dementia Frontotemporal, the family hoped that “any media attention can be focused on shining light on this disease that needs much more awareness and research,” adding that Bruce “always believes in using his voice in the world to help others, and to raise awareness of important issues in public and private.”
They continued: “We know in our hearts that – if it could today – would want to respond by bringing the attention of world -wide and contact with those who also deal with this debilitating disease and how it affects so many individuals and their families.”
Emma was asked if he could have a chat with Bruce, what he would ask him.
“Exactly how he does, (if) he’s right, he feels fine. If there’s anything we could do to support him better. I would love to know that. If he was scared. If he’s ever worried,” he said. “You know, I would love to be able, just to have a chat with it.”
