There has been a lot of talk recently about Hollywood’s inability to get men to watch what he has been producing. It is true that men have abandoned men -focused entertainment properties like Star Wars and Marvel, leaving box office totals plumbing and streaming apps like Disney+ scrambling.
That said, Hollywood has not done much better with women. Star Wars lost his male audience because Disney was re -drawn to try and attract more women. Women are not interested, so they lost everyone except for a while slopes.
While traditional Hollywood flashed around as a drowning swimmer, anime flourished. It has thrived by copying a LEGO model to create entertainment products using actual science.
For years, Lego was just boys’ toy. Lego repeatedly tried to engage women, but continued to fail. So, in 1997, Lego commissioned a multi-year ethnographic study, and they learned from it cracked the code.
Simply put, the study discovered what most people already knew through common sense: boys and girls go to imagination and play differently. When boys play, they imagine they are the characters. When women play, they imagine themselves interacting with the characters and treating them.
That fundamental difference makes it impossible to make a toy or film that appeals equally to both sexes. So Lego took what they learned and showed their Lego Friends line for women in 1999. It was immediately popular.
Anime has been on a similar trajectory. Once only nerdy young men on Bootleg DVDs have been watched by specialist interest, the genre has become a feeling among women over the last ten years.
This did not through warping and female existing anime properties that focus on men in an effort to get women involved, but rather by creating new anime stories written purposefully with women in mind.
Modern anime contains many different subgenres specifically designed to target different audiences. Shonen anime as Narrate aimed at teenage boys. Shojo as the relationship drama Fruit basket intended for teenage girls. Seinen is more extreme and intended for adult men. Josei is for adult women. Even Kodomo, like Pokémonwho are for young children.
Now, stream Services like Crunchyroll explode, offering thousands of anime shows for both sexes. Adventure shows like One piece Wild popular with males, while women watch anime shojo focus on relationships and romance as first principles. No one tries to convince women to start watching Narrateand boys are perfectly willing to let girls enjoy Fruit basket.
This weekend, a film in the form of anime called Kpop Devil Hunters were the Winner of the largest box officeAnd the audience included teenage girls altogether. In a few weeks, anime shonen Demon Slayer (A similar, completely different name) will show his first theatrical film showing his film, and that audience will probably almost completely include teenage boys.
Anime gives audiences what they want, make a ton of money, and everyone who watches it is happy.
Meanwhile, Hollywood is going to ruin. They have ignored the most basic and basic science, ignored common sense, and abandoned a formula of films for men and films for women who used to work in the name of trying to force women to watch Marvel movies Trek Star. He has not worked; Women do not watch, and now men are not either.
Take a lesson of anime and lego. It’s not too late to follow the science. Stop stealing Star Trek from men so you can give it to women. They don’t want it.
