Modern Star Trek has no interest to me anymore. I’ve talked about this already so I’m not going to re -draw a whole bunch of those points. The only thing I want to focus on is the idea that Star Trek is no longer for adults. The different TV shows all aim to keep a younger generation of fans. That means a great deal of pizazz and flash takes precedence over smart stories and complex characters.
After wide success Acor For Star Wars, hope someone at Paramount is reconsidering doing a Trek Star A series that is mature and difficult. It is clear that there is a large audience for this type of material if Acor in any sign. So, why hasn’t Star Trek tried to do something in that vein?
If you want my opinion (why else are you reading this?), Star Trek needs to do something outside the box for an adult audience. I think there is a very easy way to do this with a time -tested genre: Star Trek needs to make a legal excitement film.
One of the big issues for Star Trek fans who have spent like me is that the older shows introduce groups of military professionals who act as professionals. There was a cadence and tone for the USS crews Venture and the folks on Deep Space Nine which are completely abandoned by a modern Star Trek. I’m not saying I’m opposed to Silliness in Star Trek – “Take me out to the Holosuite” is one of my favorite chapters – but there has been a general move towards floppy and wackiness characters with Modern Star Trek.
Star Trek’s legal excitement film would offer an opportunity to return to a serious location with professionals who need to demonstrate a certain level of stockism in their job. It does not mean that the story told cannot be entertaining, but a legal location would offer a structure to Star Trek to introduce himself in the same tone as those classic shows.
And it’s not like there is no modern inspiration that Star Trek could draw from for a legal excitement film series.
I thought of a field for the Star Trek legal thriller series after I watched two films from last year: Conclave and Juror #2. These were attractive and mature films with complex characters and motives that made me go, “This would be great if Star Trek did something like this.” I won’t go into my pitch (unless people are interested, find me on social media) but enough is to say that it is nice to feel that I am inspired by both of those films. I recommend both of them but especially if you want to see how you could turn them into Star Trek stories for adults.
They offer major compelling characters trapped in power systems that they must navigate for their own survival. Instead of sloppo as Section 31This would be a great way to research more sticky parts and even shadow Starfleet. And most importantly, he would not have to downgrade his drama, dialogue, or characters to wander into a deemed younger audience. Could tell an adult story as Acor.
I don’t enjoy being done with Modern Star Trek, so hopefully something comes forward that reminds me of the golden age of the franchise. Star Trek’s legal excitement film seems mature for that opportunity.
