Quentin Tarantino recently went on one of his expected film diatribes. This time, he reflected on his own filmography and attached appraisals with many of his most distinctive films. When it came time to name one of his masterpiece movies, Tarantino gave that difference Inglourious BASTERDSWorld War II 2009 film leading to Adolf Hitler’s reminder in hail from machine gun bullets.
Now, I’m not here to get into some big debate about which Quentin Tarantino movie is his masterpiece. I will put that on the entry The hateful eight is my favorite of Tarantino’s feature movies, and I might even like Killing a Bill more than Inglourious BASTERDS As long as one I want to call on immediately.
But Quentin Tarantino is very damning when he says Inglourious BASTERDS is his masterpiece. Why? Because this may be the only one of his films more than himself.
Like any crusty white guard who is better at talking about movies than anything else in their lives, I have a deep affection for Quentin Tarantino and his body of cinematic work. However, it is very clear that so many of his storytelling and interest become a fan of films. So much of his cinematic style and narratives draw directly on the influences of Tarantino’s love. That’s no different than any filmmaker or artist, but Tarantino’s entire aesthetic is about reminiscent of the films as a form of cultural art.
Quentin Tarantino obviously loves movies in a deep way but until Inglourious BASTERDSHe hadn’t said much about the medium itself really as something more than “cool.” In that film, he decided to tell a story where film and film theater were the essential elements of a revenge conspiracy against the Nazis. It’s a story about the armor of movies and film culture against evil. One of the definitive images of Inglourious BASTERDS Is Shoshanna’s huge look on the theater screen, laughing in hand as the theater burns down and burns the crowd.
This is the first time Quentin Tarantino has felt like he has something to say legally through the art of filmmaking. Before Inglourious BASTERDS. With Inglourious BASTERDSAt last Tarantino made a movie that felt more than himself or his particular genre interests. He made a film that felt it was beyond being a cool film alone.
Inglourious BASTERDS Still an entertaining film on its own, but when it is put against the rest of Quentin Tarantino’s filmography, he stands as his strongest statement as a storyteller. I could go on and on for my reading of The hateful eightBut I recognize that a movie message is much more complex and hard to prepare than what Inglourious BASTERDS do. It is worth arguing Inglourious BASTERDS Better in that attitude, but as I said, I’m not here to get into the weeds about which film is the best.
Inglourious BASTERDS is Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece. This is the most resonant and rewarding of his films outside his status as a pure film. It allows for revenge restoration that fiction alone can allow, and that only the movies can really display them. This is the same film I had put out of his filmography that everyone should see. Because if you don’t jump for joy or laugh with Glee when Adolf Hitler is crushed to pieces, it’s a good indication that you need Aldo Raine to use his knife on your forehead.
