After years of tweaks, help, and Twitter calls, we finally have one real super fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will face Terence “Bud” Crawford on September 13 in Las Vegas. And yes, pigs might be flying because this fight is about as unlikely as it gets.
Let’s get one thing straight: Terence Crawford, a natural 147-pound welterweight, is jumping up three weight classes to fight Canelo. THREE. This guy didn’t exactly look like a knockout artist at 154 pounds in his only fight there, but sure, why not test your limits against a guy who’s been crushing people at 168 pounds and even held at 175? It sounds reasonable.
Bud is 38, by the way. Most fighters this age are considering retirement, not booking fights against one of the most dangerous men in the sport. But hey, there’s probably a Brinks truck parked in Crawford’s driveway as we speak, so who are we to judge?
BetOnline.ag oddsmakers aren’t buying into the underdog fairy tale. They opened with Canelo as a -150 favorite and Crawford at +120. This has already been changed to:
Translation: The size difference isn’t just real, it is ridiculous. And punters are approaching Canelo like it’s Black Friday at Walmart.
Crawford is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters out there, hands down. But that’s less “pound for pound” and more “pound for pound.” plus fifty.” If Canelo somehow wins, they will have to rewrite the history books, build him a statue and crown him the king of all combat sports.
But let’s be real. Canelo has been turning natural heavyweights into punching bags for years. And now a welterweight, however brilliant, is supposed to survive this? Good luck Bud. You will need it.
