Manchester United’s head, Ruben Amorim, rejected the suggestions he needed to strengthen his goal options, despite the expensive Altay Bayindir error in 1-0 defeat in Arsenal on the early weekend of the Premier League.
Bayindir, a favorite ahead of Andre Onana, at Old Trafford, did not face a corner of Declan Rice that allowed Riccardo Calafieri to go to the only goal of the party.
Onana, who had lost the preseason with a rope number, returned to the full training last week, but was not included in the squad.
Amorim, however, was next to his goalkeeper when he was questioned after the game.
“I’m happy with the three goalkeepers,” Amorim said. “He (Bayindir) chooses to get the ball but he is pressing. This is my feeling when I see the play.
“Choose to push a player (out of the way) or get the ball at that moment. He must use his hands to catch the ball, do not push the players. He chooses to push the players and let the ball pass.”
The decision to start in Bayindir was a surprise, especially since Amorim had confirmed on Friday that Onana was suitable for presenting. But he insisted that the Cameroonian was not “fallen”.
“I didn’t drop onana from the squad,” Amorim said. “This is not the case to drop ornament. It is not to put Andre onana in just a week without seeing the game, without time, with training.
“Tom (Heaton) and Bayindir, during the preseason, did a good job.”
Despite the narrow defeat, United created several good opportunities and was probably the stronger side for long periods. Patrick Dorgu took office in the first half, while Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo forced to save the goalkeeper from Arsenal David Raya.
“It’s the feeling that we played better,” said Amorim. “We were the best team, but in the end we lost the game. I am really proud of the work they put on the field and it is important to move forward.
“Today we have shown that we can win any game at the Premier League, especially against a great team like Arsenal, and that we were the best team.”
The party also emphasized the potential changes in US attack options. Rasmus Hojlund, left out of the template completely, faces the increasing uncertainty about his future.
Reports in Italy have linked the striker, who joined United in 2023, with a transfer to Milan. Its sports director said to Mediaset: “Hojlund is a good option for us. We are thinking about it, but in the transfer market you will never know what could happen.”
Meanwhile, the new arrival Benjamin Sesko was introduced from the bench against the Gunners after being presented before the Old Trafford crowd. Amorim suggested that the couple are in direct competition.
“It’s a struggle for places,” Amorim said. “We will see what will happen in the market. There are different characteristics. Rasmus has the same characteristics of Benjamin Sesko, so we have to choose.”
