Mikel Arteta praised the winning mentality on their Arsenal side after they opened their premier League campaign with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in Old Trafford.
Riccardo Calafieri scored the only goal in the 13th minute, getting close after goalkeeper Altay Bayindir could not cope with the corner of Declan Rice.
For Arsenal, the result strengthened its transformation to “Big Six” companions. In September 2020, less than a year after Arteta’s term, the Gunners had won only two of their previous 40 games against this opposition.
Now, they are uninhabited in 21 consecutive games in the Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham for the last two seasons.
Reflecting on progress, Arteta said: “Well, I think it was the case … It was 18 years or 22 years here in Old Trafford without winning before coming, and now I go to the locker room, we won here the first game and we are not happy yet. Good sign.
“A great important result in the first game of the season at Old Trafford. When you feel that they are building something special and impulse with the new signings and want to kick the season in a good way and you can go out with victory, I think I’m really happy.”
Arteta was equally satisfied with the way his players responded to difficult times during the contest.
“Today we have shown it differently. I think we have done two things very well. One, to take the piece and then react to mistakes especially. Some of them are necessary, some of them unusual. But the way each player reacted to this gives us the opportunity to win the game.

Then Arsenal returns to the Emirates to accommodate Leeds on August 23. Manchester United is back in action the next day, traveling to Craven Cottage to face Fulham.
