The meeting with US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin was picked up as a vital step to peace in the war of Ukraine.
But without ceasefire and invitation to Moscow, almost a three -hour meeting between two leaders gave more questions than answers.
Here are five key trips from the Alaska summit.
When President Vladimir Putin returned to the world stage on Friday, the sky in Alaska were cloudy. Waiting for the red carpet located on the asphalt joint base of Elmendorf-Richardson, US President Donald Trump.
When Putin approached, Trump clapped his hands. Both leaders warmly shook their hand and smiled.
It was a great moment for Putin-leader, which most Western countries avoided after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. His international journey since then was heavily limited to the friendly nation to the Russian Federation, such as North Korea and Belarus.
The fact that the Alaska summit generally took place for Putin. But this reception would exceed the wildest Kremlin’s dreams. In a few six months, Putin moved from the west’s eyes to be welcomed by us as a partner and a friend.
In order to stop it, at the obvious moment, Putin decided to accept the rise to the Trump armored bacon, and not drive on his own Moscow state car.
When the vehicle was distracted, the cameras approached Putin, sitting in the back seat and laughing.
In his 25 years, as President of Russia Putin has reached full control over the media, crushing journalistic freedoms and replacing the information propaganda. In Russia, he is not often – if he – if – does – opposes unfriendly journalists.
But only a few minutes after the landing in Alaska, one journalist shouted in his direction: “Will you stop killing civilians?” When the question was disturbed by it, he did not show it, appearing instead of shaking his shoulders and pulling his gaze.
During the short and several chaotic photo, there were more questions, including in -Russian, whether Putin will be ready to meet President Loladimir Zelensky for a trilateral summit. Again, there was no obvious reaction from the Russian president outside the mysterious smile.
The media gathered in the room with Putin and Trump to wait for a press conference; Instead, both leaders made statements and did not accept questions from journalists.
The unusually Putin was the first to speak. He praised the “constructive atmosphere of mutual respect for” Talks “, and then launched into a condensed history of Alaska’s past as a Russian territory.
As Putin said, Trump stood silently. It took a few minutes before the Russian president mentioned that he called the “situation in Ukraine” – allegedly catalyst for the summit. When he did it, it was stated that although an uncertain “agreement” was reached, the “root reasons” of the conflict had to be eliminated before it could reach peace.
The phrase will postpone the bells of the alarm in Kiev and beyond. Since the beginning of the war, he has become short -fashioned for a number of unsolvable and maximalist requirements that Putin says he is in the way of ceasefire.
These include the recognition of Russian sovereignty over the Ukrainian regions of Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson, as well as Ukraine, agreeing to demilitarization, neutrality, no foreign military participation and new elections. In fact, they make up the Kyiv surrender, but the most important thing for Moscow after three and a half years of bloody conflict.
It was clear that there was no deal.
It is unusual – given the context and prerequisites for the summit – when Trump’s turn came, he did not mention Ukraine and the possibility of ceasefire once. The closest thing he came, referring to the conflict, said that “five, six, seven thousand people a week” were killed and noting that Putin also wanted to see the end of the bloodshed.
Usually, it is supposed to say less than Putin. His statement was characteristic of his relative and unusual, briefly – but first of all for his vagueness. “There were many, many points we agreed,” said Trump, adding that “great progress” was made in an “extremely productive meeting”.
But he did not share any details, and it seemed that any specific steps taken within the framework of resolution of the Ukrainian conflict. No major agreements and a trilateral meeting with President Zelensky were announced.
And – for Moscow’s relief – there was no mention of “grave consequences” that Trump threatened will follow if the ceasefire is not reached.
“We didn’t get there,” Trump admitted.
Then, optimistic, though vaguely, he added: “But we have a very good chance of getting to there.”
The summit may not have been able to make a significant progress against peace in Ukraine, but it secured the rapprochement between Russia and the United States.
Photos of the two presidents repeatedly shaking their hands and smirked, traveled far and in wide social media – as well as images of US military, kneeling when they expelled the red carpet by Putin’s plane.
Before completing his statement, Putin referred to one of the frequent US president’s conversations – that the conflict in Ukraine had never begun if Trump was in power.
Despite Trump’s assertion of “great progress”, nothing was presented at the Alaska summit – but two leaders left the door open to another meeting this time on Russian soil. “I will probably see you again very soon,” Trump said.
After completing a joint statement where he did not have to fulfill his promises, no concessions and no compromises, Putin may have felt calm enough to invade English. Laughing, he looked at Trump and said, “Next time in Moscow.”
“Oh, it’s interesting,” Trump said. “I’ll get a little warm on this, but I – I saw it possible.”
