Sometimes even the best golfers in the world can allow a string of bad days on the course to follow home – just ask Collin morikawa.
In a unique interview with Weekly USMorikawa, 28, admitted that it can be “very difficult” to focus on anything other than the sport when things are not working out.
“Golf is a big part of my life and who I am,” said Morikawa. “When it goes great, it’s very easy to be able to separate yourself. But when it’s not going too, your mind constantly thinks of golf. ‘How to continue to heal?’ Because that’s the hunt.
Morikawa, a big two-time PGA tour champion, argued that golfers are forced to be a different level of “mentally strong” than other sports athletes.
“He takes a doll out of you,” he said. “I don’t think people realize the stress it puts on our bodies we go through every day. We try to perfect this game, basically, can’t perfect. We can’t go 4-for-4 with five RBIs and two home runs. No one is going to get 18 birdies in a round.
Morikawa said he had learned to find a balance with his professional activities and personal life by “managing time.”
“Like anyone successfully in a job, you have to be really good with your time,” he explained. “You can do a lot if you put your mind on it in a short space of time. That’s the most important thing.”
Morikawa also credited his wife, Katherine – A marathon runner and a former golfer who married in November 2022 – with a vital asset to his mental health.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a necessity for everyone, but it’s a necessity for me,” said Morikawa for his marriage. “I’m so proud of her. I think the motivation she gives me with what she does with her is running, she pushes me every day to heal. She played golf at college and stopped playing after a year of pro play, and was able to travel with me.”
Morikawa continued, “He is lucky to have your best friend by your side and be able to go out to enjoy life, travel the world, see new places and do what I love.
Currently, Morikawa is in the hunt at the FedExcup Playoffs, which continues this weekend of Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland.
