I hate the term “guilty pleasure.” Yes, I understand that it may apply to things other than movies, but movies are the only other language I speak fluently, and “Guilty Pleasure” is part of the Lexicon discussion film that needs to disappear. I was able to write enough pieces on these various terms that I need to retire-expect “so bad it’s good”, “plot hole”, and “plot armor” to make possible appearances in the near future-but I counted that I would talk about this one first for a couple of reasons.
For starters, this is because I stopped using the term “guilty pleasure” years ago and my relationship with films and art was generally enriched.
What does it mean when someone says he likes a movie as a guilty pleasure? It immediately labeled whatever movie they talk about as something they feel somewhat ashamed. This encourages general shame about liking some films, and some films can only be appreciated from some kind of shameful point of view.
That is only going to encourage more of the irony poison that infects our whole society. People who talk about a guilty pleasure film are more likely to evaluate art from a more ironic perspective. When you program yourself to distance any sincerity from the art you experience, it starts to affect your overall appraisal.
I know because that’s what I experienced in my younger days as a growing movie freak, and I want to try to remove others before it’s too late.
When I watch a movie today, if he engages me in any way, I consider that victory. So many movies are not able to reach a level of fundamental interest, even the price of a large budget as the recent Jurassic World: Restore (My review). So, I don’t care if you are a Neil Breen movie or a written troma movie, if you have my attention and keep it, I’m going to embrace you.
I recognize that I am much more open and welcoming with the wide selection of films I watch than most people, but that attitude has also allowed me to enjoy and discover more films. And I do not look at any of those as a guilty pleasure. Mouth is my favorite movie but I’ll talk the same way about that masterpiece widely accepted as I do Critic or Tremor or even Ghoul. If I like a movie, I like it without any care of how others would find its presumed status.
There is no reason to use the term “guilty pleasure” other than to assume others of your assured critical intelligence in terms of film perception. Don’t be afraid to seriously make arguments over the movies you love without some layer of colds apart in the service of your ego. If you love that The war of the worlds movie I’m not going to watchMake a valid argument for why you love her outside to be a heckler. Start standing for your responses to a film instead of pawning them away by deviating shame.
