Trump unfolds a national guard in Washington and promises a crime

President Donald Trump posted a national guard in Washington and took control of city police forces when he pledged to crack crime and homelessness in the country’s capital.

On Monday, Trump announced an “public safety emergency”, deploying 800 National Guard troops, which will strengthen hundreds of federal law enforcement officers located on weekends.

“This becomes a situation of complete and complete lawlessness,” he told the White House to journalists.

The mayor of Muriel Bowzer rejected the president’s claims about the crime, and while in 2023 there was a spike, statistics show that he has fallen since then. A violent crime in the city is also at a 30-year minimum.

“I announce a historical action to save the capital of our country from crimes, bloodshed, beadlam and a firmer,” Trump said during a press conference at which he was launched by the US Prosecutor, Bondi, who heads the city’s police while he is under federal control.

“This is the day of liberation to DC and we’re going to return our capital back,” he said.

Trump said Washington was “carried by violent gangs and bloodthirsty criminals” as well as “drug addicts and homeless”.

According to the city police department, the killings decreased by 32 percent between 2023 and 2024 and reached the lowest level from 2019.

This year there was another significant drop in 12 percent, the data shows.

The mayor of the Bowzer, the Democrat, acknowledged that in 2023 there was a “terrible” splash of a crime that reflected the national tendency, but it pushed away from any claim to the crime in the city.

“We don’t feel the criminal outbreak,” she said on Sunday MSNBC. “The president is very aware of our efforts.”

When asked about the deputy chief of the White House headquarters Stephen Miller, Washington is tougher than Baghdad, Bowzer said: “Any comparison with the war -destroyed country is hyperbolic and false.”

Of the 800 National Guard troops to be activated, law enforcement agencies will be deployed and supported at any time, the army said.

In addition, as a deployment, Trump said he would post a police department under direct federal control, using the Law on the Rules of the Columbia County.

This act was established by former President Richard Nixon to allow Washington residents to be the only city in any of the 50 states – to choose the city council and mayor.

But he also has a nuance that allows the president to take control of city police forces when “there are special conditions of emergency.”

If the president intends to take control of more than 48 hours, they need to give a written message to Congress. And even if this message is provided, they cannot support the police control for more than 30 days.

On Sunday, when asked about the possibility of the President to take control of the city police department, the mayor of the Bowzer said: “In our law there are very specific things that would allow (this). None of these conditions in our city now.”

She said she was “concerned” by the National Guard complied with local laws.

Later on Monday, the Bowzer made a press conference stating that the president’s order was “restless and unprecedented”.

She said Trump’s view of the city was “formed by his experience during his first term”, which, she said, was a “difficult time” for the district.

“It is true, we have survived a criminal spike of post-kapusta,” she said.

“We quickly worked to pass the laws that received violent violators from our streets,” she added. “We have observed a huge decrease in crime from these efforts.”

Like the crime, Trump has long been told about homelessness in Washington.

“We get rid of the slums,” he said, not giving further information. He said that the homeless people would be sent to another place, but did not say where.

Trump added that “everything should be perfect” when dignitaries and foreign leaders visit the city.

“This is a very strong reflection of our country,” he said. “When our capital is dirty, our whole country is dirty and they don’t respect us.”

Local groups working with homeless people in the capital reported the BBC that they have seen progress in recent years.

In 2025, the homelessness decreased by almost 20% for people in Washington, compared to five years ago, said Ralph Boyd, the president and the CEO, so that others could eat (some) – a group that provides people in the city housing, clothing and other social services.

He also said Trump’s proposal to move people out of the city is not a long -term decision.

“Everything that it will do is transfer the problem where you are still in the community, which may be less equipped to deal with it than we are,” Boyd said.

Meanwhile, outside the White House, the participants of the rally concerned Trump gathered and chanted “Hands from Permanent Current” and “Protect House Management”.

“Trump doesn’t care about DC security, he cares about control,” the speaker said at the event.

In recent days, the president’s actions have been performing a number of messages on social media in which he criticized Washington’s work. Trump has long complained about the city’s democratic leadership for a crime and homelessness.

He also responded angrily to a former employee of the Government Efficiency Department (DOGE), recently attacked in the city.

During a press conference on Monday, Trump said he had shot down a roaming group and left dig into blood.

He also mentioned other federal government officers and elected attacks, including a democratic legislator and trainee.

“This is a threat to America,” Trump said.

For the first time, Trump launched a national guard in June when he ordered 2000 national guards in Los Eandgeles dealing with excitement about raids on undocumented migrants.

The last time the National Guard was located in Washington was in response to the Capitol riot in 2021.
