This year’s southeastern Asian misses in the United States – For various reasons.
The Singaporets, however, reject it at higher levels than others, a survey of 6000 regional travelers showed.
Surveys by order Travel CNBC 7% of Singaporets said their interest in US visit increased this year, and more than half (55%) said their interest had decreased.
Both figures arise sharply with 44% of Southeast Asia respondents, who said their interest in the United States increased this year, and 18% said they fell, according to a Market Research Millieu Insight poll.
Once and again, the poll showed that Singapore’s views in the United States differed from opinions with Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines and Malaysia – often with a large removal.
The Singaporets were the only respondents in the poll, who said they were still receiving most of their information from local and international news. Respondents from the other five countries, including 80% of those from Thailand, said social media is their main news source.
A higher level of concern
A poll conducted from May 22 to June 10 showed that the Singaporets are more concerned about trips to the US than others in the region, in relation to:
- Their personal security in the US (+13 percentage points)
- possible discrimination or poor treatment as long as there are (+17 percentage points)
- Actions of Trump Administration (+18 percentage points)
- Violence with weapons (+20 percentage points)
- Border detentions (+13 percentage points)
Because Singapore has low crime, its citizens have high security expectations, Zilm Cambl said, a senior hospitality and tourism management teacher at James Cook University.
The country often occupies as One of the safest countries of the world.
Singapore Kimberley quota said she was standing out of the US this year.
“I was not too interested in going to the US, mostly from my security,” she said. “You see a lot of articles about the news of hatred against Asians – as well as firearms.”
A student of Singapore University Kyle also stated that weapons that do not meet in South -East Asia have weakened interest in visiting the United States
Politics and tariffs are not her major problems, she said. Rather, “it is about how a firearm is allowed. I feel that (rules) are not actually complied with.”
Visas and detentions
The poll showed that Singaporets are less concerned than other respondents on two questions: travel costs and visa requirements.
At the beginning of 2025, the Henley Passport Index showed that Singapore was the strongest passport in the world.
However, the Singaporets were the least sure of the US immigration control, the survey showed. About 60% said they thought the process would be smooth, compared to 78% of those from other parts of Southeast Asia.
“When I go to immigration, I would be worried if I was detained just because I am (ethnically) Chinese,” said the Singapore Tiffany NG.
NG said its US perception has changed, in particular, over the last six months.
“I feel it became a more dangerous place,” she said. “It seems quite uncertain.”
Citizen Singapore Rahul Jane said the United States is not on travel list this year. In the past, he recalled “a lot of check, a lot of check” by the US immigration bodies.
But for him the problem is deep, he said.
“Violence there, crime, poverty,” he said. “I am sure that the situation is not as bad as the media, but … why risk?”
