Carole Radziwill opened for his “last summer” with close friends John F. Kennedy Jr. and Besstte-Kennedy Carolyn In the gripping cnn docuseries The prince of America.
The three -part series revolved around John’s Lifelong Battle with his family’s legacy as well as his hurricane courtesy and marriage to Carolyn before they died in a plane crash in 1999 near Martha Vineyard. (Carolyn’s sister Lauren bests Also killed in the accident).
As part of this unprecedented examination of John’s life, Real House Wives New York City Alum Carole also looked back at her own marriage with John’s first cousin Anthony Radziwillwho died of cancer less than a month after John and the sisters Bessette were killed. (Anthony’s mother, Lee Radziwiłłwere Jackie Kennedysister.)
“All I could think of (when John and Carolyn died) was, I’m going to be the only one (of us) left,” said Carole.
The prince of America Premieres on CNN Saturday, August 9, at 9 pm et. Keep scrolling for some of Carole’s most poignant disclosures from the dock:
One long -standing Kennedy family legend was rejected in the opening segment of The prince of AmericaFirst episode, “The boy who would be king,” as Carole occasionally denied that anyone in John’s family had never called him “John John.” Although John was not known to have liked the nickname, Carole’s revelation was particularly surprising since referring to his friend as “John John” in the media for his whole life.
“This whole ‘John John’ thing, I don’t know where it came from,” the Fragment Seren admitted. “I think it’s a thing for the press. Something happened where people thought his family might have called him, ‘John John.'”
Then he explained, “Some people began to say (‘John John’) to suggest that they were close to him. I promise you, his sister did not call him ‘John John.’ His mother, no one in his extended family, even as the extended cousins, had never called him ‘John John.’ “
Carole met her husband, Anthony, while they were both working at ABC News. While they eventually tied the knot in August 1994, Carole and Anthony were initially worried about how their workplace relationship would be seen.
“Anthony and I started dating eight months after I first met him in La,” he remembered. “We were together, kind of casual (ly), because we were both ABC News and we both felt like, ‘Let’s keep this quiet.’ But, of course, it was’ 90s.
Carole remembered meeting Carolyn and forming a bond immediately with her very early in the relationship with a PR relationship before Calvin Klein with John.
“She was so peculiar in so many ways,” said Carole about his friend. “We were in our late 20s at the time and she was the first woman I had ever known who, like, was the highly used expression, ‘Girl’s Girl.’ She was so beautiful. ”
The What’s left The author acknowledged that she and Carolyn never co -go with the rest of Clan Kennedy.
“It’s a big family and like all big families, there’s a lot of politics and quirks you just have to learn. John’s family may be bigger than other families,” Carole acknowledged The prince of AmericaSecond chapter. “There was a higher expectation and he didn’t play (Carolyn) of the game. She didn’t suck for anyone, no one in his family.”

Her mother was a single mother picking up three women in a very working class neighborhood. I think we felt like a real sisterhood because we were as outside.”
Anthony suffered testicular cancer happening again shortly before his marriage and Carole, who coincided with the diagnosis of his own aunt Jackie Kennedy with a non-Hodgkins lymphoma in 1994. (Jackie died in May 1994 while Anthony surrendered to cancer in August in August 1999.))
“It was very traumatic because, at that point, my fiancé was battling cancer,” said Carole.
Carole remembered a wrenching phone conversation where Anthony and Jackie tried to cut the news to each other about their diagnoses.
“I remember him saying, ‘Okay, you go first.’ Then (Jackie) said, ‘I have bad news that I have been diagnosed with lymphoma,’ “said Carole. “The end (to Jackie) came quite quickly. I remember it was Sunday when we were all together and (by) Thursday, he died.”
A significant proportion of The prince of AmericaA second chapter examined a second chapter how John and Carolyn drew a private wedding in Cumberland Island, Georgia in September 1996. Friends and family confirmed that the couple only invited a few representatives from each branch of Clan Kennedy to prevent the paparazzi from discovering.
“(John) was the most famous guy in the world. As a couple, they were in great demand,” Carole noted. “They married on a small island. There wasn’t one photographer … they wanted to keep him a little private for a little longer.”
In terms of the ceremony itself, Carole joked that the new -born had gone for a completely DIY method without extravagance that anyone would expect from Kennedy’s marriage.
“(Outside) of the church, there was a pigy s *** and a horse’s man everywhere,” said Carole with bulls. “He came (carolyn) of fashion, and was passionate about magazines. It’s funny because of his sister (Caroline Kennedy) Had a T-shirt for them for their wedding and said … ‘Politics + fashion = fashion.’ “
One troubled moment occurred at the wedding reception when Carolyn’s mother, Ann MarieDelivering a toast that proved prophetic, according to Carole.
“Carolyn’s mother really loved John but when he did Dost, I will never forget, at the end, he said, ‘I hope my daughter has the strength for this,'” Carole revealed. “Everyone, kind of, stopped for a moment. I think, even Carolyn in his way, underestimated the impact of marriage John and married to the family.”
Carolyn and John had several runs in with the paparazzi in the final year of their lives. Carole remembered that John was usually able to shake these dust because he had dealt with them all his life, while Carolyn was much more rushing.
“John could not understand that, as he was a very privileged man, he had no sense of what the press would say about her,” admitted Carole.
Carolyn designed a plan to wear the same boring uniform in public repeatedly in the hope of preventing photographers from following it – although even this clever idea failed to relieve media interest. One particularly poignant moment occurred when Carole was on the phone with Carolyn during Princess Diana’s funeral in August 1997. (Diana died as a result of injuries caused by a car with a car with the Paparazzi in Paris.)
“It was very intense,” said Carole. “That is, Princess Diana, she was our age, more or less. The basic way he died, which literally was being hovered to death by paparazzi. Definitely not lost that lesson on Carolyn.”
John piloted a private plane, with Carolyn and his sister Lauren on board, to attend his cousin Rory kennedyA wedding at the Martha vineyard in July 1999, only the plane crashed just before it was due to get land. The three were later dead as a result of the tragic accident.
The prince of AmericaA third chapter and a final episode, “The Final Summer,” included honest memories from Carole and other friends about how they learned about the accident.
“Just one of those calls you scare. Immediately you know (there’s something wrong),” said Carole. “It was 11 o’clock, close to midnight on Friday night, and John’s friend … called him () Hyannis Airport, saying, ‘They’re not here. Are they there with you?’ Even as 25 years later, I still have this pool in my stomach. ”

It is paired/wireCarole relied on her background as a journalist to call all agencies who may have information about his friends’ location.
“Every call I made, it was more bad news,” he said. “I called Carolyn’s mother to tell her that they hadn’t arrived, that the plane was missing. How do you say that to a mother?”
Carole’s husband, Anthony – who was in the final cancer of the time – arose – eventually from bed and was amazed to see dozens of notes his wife used to document her temporary investigation.
“He looked at him and he was like, the sadness,” he reflected. “I remember just putting his head down in his hands and he was just like, he couldn’t even cry.”
In the final seconds of the Docuseries, Carole admitted how painful it was to lose three of her closest loved ones within weeks of each other.
“He was so cruel for Anthony to have to watch (the death of his cousin),” he declared. “John and Anthony, they were real brothers. All I could think of was, ‘I’m going to be the only one left.'”
Anthony died on August 10, 1999, less than a month after John and sisters Bessette died on July 16.
