The first round of the NFL postseason begins this weekend with Wild Card Playoffs in the AFC and NFC conferences – but the reign Super Bowl champions will not play a game.
The Kansas City Chiefs clinched the No. 1 seed in the following AFC their Christmas 2024 victory for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
“I thought it was a full team performance. Defense stepped up, offense stepped up (and) everybody had their stamp on the game,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes to reporters after the game. “I told my pregnant wife (Mahomes of Brittany) I was going to get the No. 1 seed, so we could have the baby.”
The No. 1 seed does not have to play in a Wild Card game. (Meaning in the NFC, the Detroit Lions also have a bye week.) The other top seven teams in the conference will take the field, while the Chiefs and Lions get what is best described as a well-deserved day off . For Patrick, that’s when too his wife is due to give birth for her third baby.
The Chiefs will play the winner of one of the Wild Card games later this month in a divisional playoff round. The regional winners ultimately face off in an attempt to advance to the conference championship, which, of course, determines the NFC and AFC teams that will play in the 2025 Super Bowl.
Super Bowl LIX will be held in New Orleans on Sunday, February 9, and the Chiefs hope to make history and win a third Lombardi trophy in a row.
“Winning one is extremely difficult, winning two back to back like the Chiefs have done – as we know in the history of the sport – almost impossible,” retired quarterback. Tom Brady he said during a Fox Sports broadcast in September 2024. “To win three in a row? There’s a reason why no one has done it. To put three of those together … with the drafting finally, a very tough schedule, all the turnover in free agency, guys still being motivated, it’s a big challenge.”
Brady, 47, added, “Fortunately, they’ve got a tremendous coach in Andy Reid (who) never looks back. It’s not going to say, ‘Hey, because we were great last year, we’re going to be great again this year.’ He holds those men accountable. But to win it all again is a huge task.”
During the last game of the regular season and the head of the divisional round, Reid made the decision to sat out several top starters including Patrick, 29, Travis KelceChris Jones and more. Backup quarterback Carson Wentz He started a January 5 road game against the Denver Broncos that ended in a 38-0 Chiefs rout, eliminating the Cincinnati Bengals and the Miami Dolphins from the playoffs.
