Bryan Kohberger Could be behind bars for the rest of his life, but there are still a number of unanswered questions why he killed four University Idaho students.
Kohberger broke into the Moscow, Idaho, home in 1122 King Road on November 13, 2022, and stabbed Ethan Chapin. Xana Kernodle. Maddie and Kayleee goncalves to death with a ka-bar knife. He was arrested just over a month later and initially pleaded not guilty.
The former PhD student appeared in court in July 2025 – a month before his trial was due to start – and change his plea. Kohberger pleaded guilty to four first -degree murder charges and one count of felony burglary in a deal that took the possibility of the off -table death penalty. Was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of a later parole the same month.
Kohberger has remained quiet throughout the case, even refusing to address his victims’ families during his sentencing hearing.
After Kohberger was officially sentenced, the GAG command was raised on key players in the case – with many having started talking out. The Moscow Police Department also released over 300 documents regarding their investigation.
However, there are still many unanswered questions about the murders. Keep scrolling for a breakdown:
The biggest question related to Idaho’s murders is the motivation. Kohberger has not spoken at all about why he broke into the King’s House in November 2022 and stabbed all four victims. Even enforcement of the law does not have a clue for the reason behind its actions.
Chief Investigators on the case, Idaho Province Police Darren Gilbertson’s Lieutenant and Moscow police Corporal Brett PayneThey were asked at a press conference on July 2025 whether they had no clear motivation. “We’re not,” they answered.
It was widely speculated that Kohberger entered the home and gone to the third floor immediately – where there were Mogen and Goncalves rooms. Prosecutors have also speculated that either Mogen or Goncalves was a target intended Kohberger.
Documents released by the Moscow Police Department revealed friends of Goncalves claiming to have a “stalker.” Apparently, Goncalves thought someone was following her, and her friends remembered one incident where she claimed to see “unknown male up their house to the south who stared at her.”
The Ka-Bar knife that Kohberger used to murder all four college students has not yet been restored.
Groncalves’ sister claimed that Kohbeger had used a second weapon during her victim’s impact statement in her sentencing hearing. However, this has not yet been confirmed.
“There were injuries that seemed to have been caused by something other than the knife, although it may have been a knife,” Latah Sir Prosecutor Bill Thompson Divided in a July 2025 interview with Idaho statesman. “I do not think we can exclude the possibility of an additional weapon.”
Kohberger has not spoken at all since he was arrested. It appears that its pled change He has to do with the death penalty – taken off the table in his plea deal. Thompson confirmed during the same interview on July 2025 that his team would have sought the death penalty if the case had made him trial.
“This was certainly a case where the death penalty was appropriate,” he said. “If we finished going through a trial to a penalty period, I think it has met the elements.”
