Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has garnered accolades Sanju Samson for his outstanding performances in T20Is over the last year. After years of inconsistency and limited opportunities, Samson made a strong comeback, becoming a key player in India’s T20 World Cup-winning team and delivering match-winning knocks in bilateral series against Bangladesh and South Africa.
Speaking to Star Sports, Bangar highlighted how Samson’s run of games has finally allowed him to show his potential.
Bangar emphasized that consistent opportunities have been crucial to Samson’s recent success.
“I’m glad to see the kind of success that he’s been blessed with right now. He’s been around for a while. It’s just that he’s got the right opportunities and a good streak of opportunities because every hitter, if he plays three or four games in a row, that frees him up a little bit,” Bangar said.
Samson, who has often batted lower down the order early in his career, thrived after being promoted to open the innings. He smashed centuries against Bangladesh and South Africa, making his case for regular inclusion stronger.
Bangar also drew a parallel between Samson and the legendary off-roader Yuvraj Singhespecially when it comes to the six stroke capability.
“In the batting order, he doesn’t really have to worry about the situation. The pitch is up and he’s a six-batsman. He can hit sixes with ease. After Yuvraj Singh, if there’s a batsman who can do that with so much ease consistently, it has to be Sanju Samson. So just seeing him firing on all cylinders is a joy to watch,” observed Bangar.
Samson is likely to be part of India’s squad for the upcoming series against England. The series will be India’s first white-ball assignment since October last year, and Samson is expected to play a crucial role.
With KL Rahul set to be rested, Samson might also get a call-up to the ODI squad. His last ODI appearance was against South Africa in December 2023. With the Champions Trophy scheduled for February, Samson will be keen to make the most of his opportunities in the three-match ODI series.
