The BBC World Service has collected stories about Leyan Al-Majdalavi, two and Mir Tabur, six, both killed in gas in separate incidents in November 2023, in areas where Israeli Defense Forces operated (IDF).
In response to our conclusions, IDF stated that the details of the case of Leyan and Mir were recorded and “will be considered by the competent authorities”. It adds: “Deliberate harm to civilians, especially children, is strictly forbidden.”
Leyan and Mira are just two of the more than 160 cases of children lifted in the gas for which we have collected accounts.
We found that in 95 of these cases the child was shot in the head or chest. At 59 of them we received testimony from eyewitnesses either directly or through human rights organizations and doctors. Witnesses claimed that 57 of these children were shot dead and two Palestinians were shot dead – one in a festive gun and the other in a gang conflict.
In the rest of 36 of 95 cases, we do not take into account what happened. Israel prohibits foreign journalists independently in gas, and destruction and movement impede the collection.
The Red Cross International Committee has told the BBC that the world cannot accept as a “new normal” type of war that allows you to shoot so many children.
